VBAC (Vaginal birth after caesarean)

Hi,

Any mummies attempted the above before?

What are the things to take note of?

Read some articles but don't really understand the potential implications and it seems so much more dangerous for both the mummy and baby..

Based on your experience, what can be done to minimise the risk?

Say, if the 1st pregnancy was via c-sect due to no progression in labour and the excess weight gained from that pregnancy (2 years back) had not been lost, would it affect the chances for a VBAC?

TIA! =)

I had a VBAC for baby #4. My 2nd twin (ie baby #3) was born via emergency C-Sect as he was breech and I had an infection after having my 1st twin (ie baby #2) via normal vaginal delivery. The C-sect episode was not a pleasant one for me and the wound definitely took longer to heal.

You could say I was traumatised by the C-sect and it was not an option to go through it again (unless absolutely necessary). When I was pregnant with #4, I made it clear to my gynae that I wanted a VBAC.

To have a succesful VBAC, first, you definitely have to have a supportive gynae. Mine (DR Ben Tham frm TMC) definitely was. However, he also pointed out the pros and cons.

It depends on the time lapse between your C-Sect and the current pregnancy. Most gynaes recommend at least 18months (the longer the better), to let the wounds heal esp internally. In my case, baby #3 was born on 3rd Jan 2005 and #4 via VBAC on 2nd Sep 2006 (36 weeks).

Size of your baby and head circumference is also a factor to consider. A smaller size baby is more likely to be delivered via VBAC with little or no complications involved. The risk of rupturing wound from inside is also reduced. My baby girl was born weighing 2.7kg

Lastly, you also have to look at your medical conditions, if any and also the baby's. You also have to consider how your body deals and progresses with labour, as with previous pregnancies.

At the end of the day, your gynae would be the best person to advise on your success rate with VBAC. Mine was pretty straightforward and I was really glad that I decided to have a VBAC. I hope that you would have a successful VBAC also. Rememeber to stay positive. All the best

For some mummies who are considering VBAC Vaginal Birth after Csection this is an helpful article. http://www.divaasia.com/article/16220

I am in the same situation and I am also thinking of this now. I am at 14 weeks and I am already doing research. But is there any docs anyone can reccomend at KKH on VBAC? My first baby was breech so I had to do c-section and was found breech at 20weeks.

Dr wee horn yen from KKH is a specialist in VBAC.. i am currently under him and may be attempting a VBAC.. but now my baby is slightly big so i think i cant decide now..

Dear Shermine,

what is the charges from him? I ever see him, but not sure what is the actual from him if it is long term

Hi mummies,
I have a successful VBAC on my number 3, my gynae is Dr Watt Wing Fong. She has highlighted n analyses the risk of complication since day 1. Throughout my pregnancy, I discussed wif her my determination n she advise me what' other precaution she n I can prepare on the big day to make sure a safe delivery.
I have been reading other threads b article when I got pregnant #3, most gynae would ask mummy go straight to c-sec, only few would pro natural. What I m trying to share is, VBAC is possible provided u reach consensus with your gynae, most importantly work together to hav safe delivery.
For mummies may have breeching problem, there's some extecise making the bb go to the right position, which I did that also before my week 32 checkup. Need to keep bb size smaller, walk a lot to expediate delivery too, long hrs will just increase the risk of wound rupture

Tt's really useful info..

Hi Clarins, I did in Mt A. Dr Watt prefer Raffles because in case there's emergency c-sec, Raffles has the team of anesthetic, fighting time will b more safe. I insist Mt A but she also suggest me to take epidural in case anesthetic not in time she can still operate with the epi effect.

I think u shd consider her advice because everyone has different risk level of VBAC, safety should come 1st still.

rachel: I had my 1st one done via c section because my baby breech. So your 1st and 2nd one done via c section? 3rd baby via VBAC this year?? I didnt like raffles, so I prefer to go Mt A. Because of this, I have already opt for c section date for my 2nd one. Abit dissapointed because I really wanted to try VBAC. I have already booked my c section date with Mt A, so there is no way change to VBAC right?

Hi Clarins,
I had my 1st one natural without epi, 2nd one c-sec because he pass motion, 3rd one VBAC without epi. Chances of VBAC is case by case basis. I m more advantage because I had success natural birth of my #1. I believe Dr Watt would hav analyse to u in order to hav VBAC, the bb must not breech, size to b small or smaller than the previous success natural birth sibling, also the history of birth.
I m not sure whether there is a turn back to VBAC after u opt for c-sec but I think best is to consult Dr Watt your chance. Maybe it could end up emergency c-sec which means ur bill can go up a lot. These r the things u might want to consider.
For me, I exercise a lot by walking so my bb born within 4 hrs from the moment of contraction, with my previous history I m having higher chance of sucess VBAC.

Hi rachel, thanks for the advice. This time my baby turned the head down at 7 month. Till now, the recent scan still shown that the head is down. Baby size is average. My previous one was a breech position and Dr Watt under estimate his weight. She told me baby should not be more than 3kg? But end up 3.42kg when I delivered him at week 38. Maybe Im too skinny and my tummy appeared to be small, so she thought the baby wont be that big. Further more, she may be thinking with my size, i got no "energy" to push?

Hi Clarins,
Don't think too much now n try not to worry too much.
Bb's weight is estimated by scan so the actual weight always turn out to b different. Mummy's size is not a judging factor. I guess it is because u do not hav any history of natural birth, it's hard to estimate how long your contraction will be before bb gets deliver. The longer the riskier... Mine is pretty fast, I deliver within one hr after admitted to hospital. My contraction not very stress for the 1st 3 hrs so everything turn out very fast.
Talk to Dr Watt if u insist VBAC, see how long she can let u try pushing
