Thumb Sucking

All the mummies who succeeded in this, please help!!

My 15 month gal has been sucking thumb to sleep and whenever her hands are free from holding toys or crawling.

I tried the tough love method. I force to take her thumb out. If she is in a good mood, she will be cheeky and occassionally test me by putting the thum or finger slightly n the outter lip. when i said "no" she will put down her finger and giggle. But when she is in the grouchy mood, or sleepy or not well, she can cry for the longest time i can imagine. then whenever she see me during that day, she seems to bear grudge against me.

I need some advice. I know i need the patience. But are there other methods that i can use?

My 8 year old girl had been sucking her thumb until she was in K1. I didnt do anything and she stopped on her own. the bump on her thumb will also reduce once she stopped.

Hi Sunfresh,

I heard that some mummies put vinegar or some chilli sauce on the thumb which puts bb off from sucking on it. You can try.

I think vinegar would be better. The smell is already quite strong.. chilli sauce might b too much for a small child esp when the taste lingers or if they rub their eyes with it!

Tried using bitter gourd... those small and really bitter type on my son. It didn't work. he eventually grew out of it on his own.

Hi...My gal started sucking her thumb since 4 mths till she was 4+yrs. I tried the nail polish look a like but it to curb nail biting kind where if they put their thumb in, it taste v bitter. When I did that, she stop intermittenly but eventually still suck here and there anytill the nail polish was gone. So that didnt quite help.

What eventually stop her was going to the dentist where the dentist help me to reinforce that if they suck, ugly worms will stay in their mouth and that the teeth will look terrible. She stopped immediately.

My boy started to suck his thumb when he was about 4 months old. I got worried when he was still at it after his 2nd birthday so I ordered both the thumb guard and Mavala Stop nail polish from amazon.com. (So kiasu hor!)

When the products came, I was a little apprehensive about using them. The nail polish label states after 3 years old while the thumb guard looks... ugly. hahaha... Anyway, one fine day, on 1st Feb, I decided that he had to stop thumb sucking so I told him that mummy is going to help him to stop putting his thumb into his mouth. I psycho him for a while then applied the nail polish when he was awake. I told him it will taste awful. hahaa... I applied on all his little fingers!

I continued to apply the nail polish every alternate day and it worked! After 3 weeks or so, he stopped sucking his thumb... so relieved... =)
