Maternity Scan/Down Syndrome Test

Hello. I’m 29yo. I just went for my maternity scan yesterday (the one that cost $300+ the Doctors called it the Down syndrome test.) everything was good, baby looked healthy in the scan and my blood test was good too but I was under high risk for trisomy 13 (1:211). I’m devastated but still hopeful because doctor says high risk, not confirmed.

1.Does anyone know how accurate the Down syndrome test is?

I went for counselling and the doctor recommended I go for further more accurate tests like the Harmony test or the other test that’s 99% accurate where they poke a needle in my belly (1 in 3 risk of miscarriage).

My husband and I are torn and broken and cannot bear to do anymore tests because whatever the results are we are going to keep the baby and fight for him or her.

2. Has anyone known anyone with high risk too but baby born healthy without issues?

I’m devastated and hoping to hear miracle stories.

I feel so sorry for you !
How many suis pregnant are you ? How far do you have to take your decision ?

Is it your first baby ? I heard in some cases the trisomy is genetic ( both parent carry a gene that gives a high chance of trisomy) :(

I truly feel for you right now. I don t think there a right advice to give you...

:( sigh. I’m exactly 12 weeks yesterday and I’m just hoping for the results to be inaccurate since it’s only high risk n not confirmed. T-T we are praying for a miracle and will continue to keep the baby till birth and see what happens.

My daughter's nanny had a similar result to her first test and she went for the second test with the needle. Turned out that everything was fine. She gave birth to a healthy boy

If you are patient enough I think the ultra sound at 20 weeks gives you also details about potential DS issues....
I am also at 12 weeks and wondering about whether or not do those test... for my daughter there were a nuchal transparency test and a simple blood test (not the expensives ones) but it seems my gynae not willing to do those...

I have another scan in March , maybe that’s the scan you’re taking about. My scan yesterday cleared all DS cos everything developed well. I hope he keeps that way and everything is good and healthy! Thank you really for your reassurance!

There are 3 type of test for DS in first trimester.

If you are on private than $300+ should be OSCAR test n the fault positive for OSCAR is relative high compare to harmony test (99% accurate) which cost $800+ in KKH before subsidies.

The one u mentioned putting needle to extract placenta DNA (baby DNA) is call Amnio and that will give u 100% accurate result and u can know everything on your LO. Amnio test have to do it before week 24 due to the risk of MS...

Nothing to worry... if u read the post here u might found 8 out of 10 have fault positive in OSCAR test...

Do not go for Amnio but do the Harmony test (no risk of ms).

That’s reassuring to hear 8/10 is false positive! Thanks a lot for that. I’m currently considering harmony test next, MAYBE. Once my Husband and I are done with the current grief we are in. Just too scared to do the test for fear of negative outcome.

Hi guys I just visited Dr. Don Wong @ The Gynae Link in Woodlands and I showed him my Oscar test results (because no one in KKH explain to me) and he was shocked to hear I was at high risk... he said high risk is usually 1:50. He mentioned maybe KKH has a different procedure cause if it was Done at Thompson they would deem me as high risk.

He said to be assured I can take a harmony/paranoma blood test...

Does anyone know about 1:211 not begin in highrisk?

Exactly. Mine wasn’t my private doc who explained it was a random guy who read the readings to me and while telling me the news he was SMILING. So I was kinda confused whether it was gd or bad news till he later said its high risk n said I need to go for further counselling. That’s all.
Cause I was supposed to see my private doc post scan. But I don’t understand why they mixed up my appointments and scheduled me to see her only next month to explain my results.

Take it easy n relax (but I know it’s hard). We have almost same result for OSCAR as yours but we done the Harmony Test to make sure everything is OK.

We have other concern after the details scan also.. but we told ourself to have faith n believe in our LO... so my wife like completely forget abt the “concern” and we treat everything is good.. if u want to know more pm me..
