Is Chinese Medication Safe during first Trimester?

Hi All!

Just tested positive on the stick and will be seeing a gynae on Thurs/Fri.
Thing is, i went to see my regular TCM yesterday and told her I might be pregnant after positive on the stick. She then gave me new medication that helps to strengthen womb and body. But then, my cousin (who has two kids) told me not to take Chinese Med during first trimester (she consulted two western doctors and both told her the same thing). It is only ok to take after first Trimester. So... need some opinions and advice here... my chinese med cost me $157! Need to think twice before ditching them... =P

Hi Dear,

Just take note that most Western dr, gynae included, will tell you to avoid Chinese medicine; as if they are prescribing you something for your pregnancy already, they are afraid that the Chinese herbs will affect with it. And that if something falls through the cracks, they won't know what caused it, and have the right to refuse to treat you further.

I was told not to take chinese medicine during pregnancy but I always trust chinese medicine more, thus I go ahead throughout my full term. Baby was very rosy and lips was very red. Healthy, strong immune. Doesn't give me much problem during teething and after injection. Very easy to take care. Just have peace of mind and enjoy your pregnancy. All the best to you.

Ask Doctor the same question today.. He said if buying Chinese medicine just tell the medical hall you are pregnant, they will know what can and cannot..

Hi Vivaforever, please do not take Chinese medicine within the first trimester and even throughout pregnancy if your condition is not stable. Chinese medicine may lead to miscarriages as currently your body needs balanced nutrition from food - any imbalances such as surges in large amounts of iodine or iron, etc, will lead to miscarriage in the precarious trimester.
If you are given Birds Nest, you may take this safely after your first trimester.

Hi Viviaforever3112,
I agreed with most of the reply that Chinese medication is fine during your first trimester but most western doc will advise you to avoid Chinese medi because it cannot be mixed in terms of consumption. Therefore if you will like to consult a TCM, you may let them know that you are consulting western doc at the same time. They will know what to do.
