i heard we need to feed the milk to the bb on the plane before the plane set off and before the plane landed?
must it be formula milk? because i'm doing total breast feeding.

Hi angeline,
No lah, need not be FM! The drinking of milk is to relieve any discomfort baby might hv during take off and landing. BFing will be soooo much more convenient!

It's going to be an experience travelling on plane with the little one. So, do prep some things to occupy him/her as he/she may get restless sitting. I suppose you are latching cos if you are going to warm up your ebm on plane, it is not allowed to bring hot water up the plane. so have to get the stewardess to heat up for you.

Hi Rachelle,

Can share more on what is allowed to be brought up the plane and what is not? Isit cannot bring hot water in a thermos flask? how about cool drinking water bottle? If we declare them, are they allowed?

Btw, is it safe to give our babies mineral water when we are overseas? Thanks.

I've actually been allowed to carry on water in a 1.5 litre hot water flask to make formula for the baby on board.I was pretty nervous about whether they would allow it, but decided to try. When they saw all my baby stuff - milk powder, bottles etc, and of course the babies, they didn't stop us.

But this was for a short trip - It may be different checks for a long haul flight? Good to call airline and just check what can be carried on and what needs to be checked in.

The destination and airlines matter a bit. Best to check the airline's website or call. Flying to the US is always a little trickier.

You're requested for the front row seats with bassinet? Your baby might not want or might not be able to fit in it...but it's really useful for keeping all that extra stuff. Also, note that whenever there's turbulence, they'll ask you to carry the baby out of the bassinet.

We flew with our then 5mth old son and it was a very tight fit for him. In the end, he slept on our lap.

caramel,
i'm also planning to bring hot water flask. if they dont allow me, may be i pour out the water?

redvelvet,
oh, need to request for the front row seats with bassinet? i thought they will automatically give me as i'm with baby? we indicated that we are with baby when we bought air tickets.

really excited now. hopefully bb won't make noise on the plane.

I have traveled twice on plane with my bb.. once to Taiwan and once to Korea.

When traveling with bb, custom is more lenient towards what we can bring on board the plane. I always bring milk powder, baby snacks, medication and also a thermal flask of warm water to make up.

We did request for bassinet on our first trip to Korea, but we think that is a bad idea. Cause everytime there is air turbulence, we have to carry my son out of the bassinet. The bassinet also take up alot of our space. I ended up carrying my son on my lap to sleep throughout the night and by the time I reach Korea, I had a pretty sore arms. On the way back from Korea, we were more experienced and the crew on board was also more experienced. The supervisor brought us to a row which is totally empty and thus we could lay our son down on the empty seats for him to sleep. He sleeps better and longer. The supervisor also thought me how to build a "tent" like cover to shield the lights from my baby so that baby can sleep.

If baby make noise or cry on plane, just keep calm and cool, some pple will look at you or complain but most will understand. Ignore those prejudice eye stares and just do your best to calm the baby down. Just do whatever you have to do.

As the environment of the plane can be pretty dry, do apply moisturizer for your baby.

I've flown to US, Aus and HK with baby and was able to bring up formula and water. Just keep everything baby related with the baby when you go through immigration. Altho the cabin crew should be able to help you on board with water, sometimes they may be too busy or inattentive, so i'd rather play safe and bring up a bit of water.

If you are going SQ, i think they will even offer you baby formula..

as for bassinet seats, yes you have to request. coz not all will like hving bassinet seats. a big downside to those seats it that the arm rests cannot be raised. My US flight was turbulent so baby ended up on my lap most of the time and it was VERY cold. but the legroom is good.

and yes, don't panic when baby fusses...you paid for your ticket too, after all ^.^

hi mummies, thanks for the advice too...

roz: that's what i think too...i am going australia (8 hours night flight) on budget airline so I prefer to bring my own flask and water so that I do not need to look for the cabin crew in the middle of the night...not sure if they can be found..haha...i remember once i flew night flight and i cannot find anyone at all!!

caramel: i think i will be very nervous abt bringing all the water too...but i don't mind if they want to check...i heard sg side they are quite ok...my cousin told me they allow her to bring thermos and water up the flight early this year...

ann: wah the supervisor is so nice...can you teach me how to make the tent too? my girl is a light sleeper...i hope she can sleep as long as possible on the night flight or else she will be very cranky...i think they will serve food in the middle of the flight and with the bright lights she sure wake up...:p

bassinet seats: i am not getting bassinet cos' my girl is 22 months liao...even sitting on our laps for 8 hours is a nitemare for us...haha...so we got a seat for her...end up her seat cost adult fare + infant fare...more expensive than our seat!!! ridiculous right...i can't believe why the fare system works this way...arghhh....

rompersleepingbag: Yup, the supervisor really displayed what is suppose to be SQ service std. He even offered to babysit my son so that me and hubby can have our meal peacefully. Oh.. we build a "tent" using the blanket. The supervisor gave us another additional blanket to use. Quite simple. Just throw one side of the blanket over the top of the chair and just let the other side flow down to the floor and it will cover the baby. But if your baby is a light sleeper, i think noises on the plane might wake her up.

Ann: oic thanks

...i think i know what you mean...but won't the side over the top of the chair affect the person behind the seat when they need to put their tray down...hehe...we are not taking SQ so cannot expect too much from budget airline service...haha

Hi all, I may be making a trip to Europe, baby wld be 1+. Just nervous, he is a very active boy. Can't sit still.

Hi Roz, you flew to the US with the baby? How long was your flight and how old was your baby?

Trax> My flight was 25 hours and my girl was 10 months old then. We actually paid for a seat for her and that made it more bearable I feel, getting that extra space.

Ya roz, we bought a seat too for my girl although our flight is only 8 hrs, can't imagine 10kg on my lap for so long on a night flight. I think it will probably be more comfy for my girl too. At least can lie down to sleep.

I have bring my son to Taiwan and HK when he was 11th months and 14 months respectively. I basically brought everything required with me up the plane.
1) 1 litres of hot water in thermal flask
2) 1 litres of plain water for my wife and baby for mixing the formula milk with the hot water
3) Liquid bb food.
4) other bb stuff

The customs spot these items but allow me and my wife to pass when they see my infant.

I took SQ for the Taiwan trip and Cathay for the HK trip...

Must ask for bassinet seat and do let them set up the bassinet even you think you may not be using. They are useful when you just want to let you bb lies somewhere first when you are preparing the food for him....

The purpose of letting him drink milk when the plane is lifting off and landing is to help him clear his ear block. At this age, the infant do not know how to do it. So by drinking milk, it will help to clear the block automatically..

Usually we are required to keep all our belongings in the cabinets during takeoff and landing. Are we allowed to hold on to a milk bottle and feed our child during takeoff and landing?

Also, any tips on how to keep your child entertained in his seat? He is so used to crawling and roaming ard - it wld be difficult to keep him constrained in a small area for so many hours.. appreciate advice. Thanks!

Hi Kelvin, thanks for sharing too..
happy.gif
I also worry a lot about ear block for my girl because I suffer from that myself...dunno how she will take to air pressure leh...

ya abt trax question...did you make the milk for a while beforehand then wait for takeoff then feed? i think this will be a struggle for me cos' when she sees me make the milk she will most likely be shouting for it already...i don't think i can restrain her with the infant belt for takeoff...and stop her from drinking her milk till after takeoff...haha...so i probably will let her suck the pacifier and pray that she does not feel much discomfort...

Trax: i think i will bring the ipad, some simple toys (like stacking cups), a few board books to keep my girl entertained...hopefully she sleeps half the time at least...:p

Yes, we are allowed to hold on to a milk bottle and feed our child during takeoff and landing provided that both you and your bb are on seat belt.

As suggested by rompersleepingbag, I let my bb watch video of himself using my Iphone to keep him occupied. My baby like to eat too So we request for kid meal beforehand. By the time, he is fed. He will tired and fall asleep. On one of the trip, he did shout and cry and make alot of noise. You just have to bear with it(and other passengers too..ha..ha). He will eventually grows tired and fell asleep.

Yes, I mix the FM before boarding and put it in a thermal bag to keep it warm. You can try to keep it out of her sight ;)
