How to force two years toddle eat medicine

try giving her sweets after each feed , let her hold the sweet in her hand first den feed her n after she eat , let her take the sweet

i think by forcing, you will make her fear the medicine more. try to coax her, tell her she will not get well if she dont eat, and have to go see the doctor again.

can also try to tell her that she wont get her fav snack as long as she doesnt get better.

this is effective for my 2 yo girl. she will hold the syringe and eat her own medicine.

my 22mth old son depends on mood n need encouragement.
Last time let him take syringe/spoon he ok. but after a while, no more NEW to him, he resist. Force down his throat he cry n puke out too.
We coax him, say he strong man (he learn from some books or tv) then he eat with mouth wide open. I thk cant let him sample , cos his bitter tastebud may sense it more.

If not,put in milk bottle lor...

I always tell son that if he don't eat medication, he won't recover and he won't get to do a lot of his favourite things like play. Somehow, kids nowadays quite smart.

Oh and I always say, shoot medicine into your mouth, shoot water into your mouth. He thinks it's fun.

toddler tend to scare if they knew that is medicine. try change to usual feeding method . for mine, i put on his ususl eating spoon and "white lies" that is soup and he drank...

If ur kid is smart like my dd then u hv to use force. No choice... I try every thing... Encouragement . White lies. Sweets . Once u do it more than 2 times, she will not buy it.. Cry kick vomit all hysteric ... After she vomit I clean her up and hv to feed her again.. She know even after vomit still hv to eat now more willingly to let me feed her... If hv more than 2 medi to take u got to let her "rest" awhile before take the other ... Otherwise all vomit out ...

My kid refuses all forms of medication except Calpol suspension (the purple boxed syrup for fevers and teething pains). When he had high fever, we had no choice but to ask doc for help and he prescribed suppository. Otherwise, no way to make him swallow medicine (powder, liquid whatever).

Tried mixing with Ribena, one sip and he said "smelly". For a while, he was checking every drink in case we laced it with medicine!

Will try tinklestar's method - sounds promising and fun!

My son knows it's medicine. When he's sick, he will request to eat medicine and he wants to take more. Maybe more means recover faster.lol. Maybe because I use the syringe and shoot into his mouth. Also every time I bring him to doc, I will say he's sick. Then feed medicine say he recover then can do this and that. Children can understand lots of things. Even at pd, he's listening. I always believe children can understand more than we think.

Hi, for my case I tried using force but didn't work cos he's so strong, messy all over the place & stressed up. It's better I distract him with something he likes eg calculator & syringe in the medicine while he's engrossed, then give water quickly.

Hi Ylang Ylang,

Same here. Tried to mix into Ribena and now he sniffs at all coloured drinks. Btw, no good to take too much Yakult for kids - phlegm and cough inducing! From my own childhood experience and kid's.

Def cannot use force on Todd. They will either vomit it all out or spit it out. Cannot put into their fav drinks too cos they are smart enff to know we have spike it. Actually the best way is still to coax, negotiating with them on their fav toys, snacks etc. Like what some mummies said, at this age, they could actually understand a lot of things. Just that kids are after all kids. even we adults also hate medicine, not to mention small kids. So just need to have more patient with them

Qinyi,

I laughed when I read your post - agree! My son now checks if drinks are 'spiked'. He can smell them out. Was better after telling him that something's in there for his own good. Not taking full dose but at least a few sips at a time.

Try giving the medicine in a spoon and after she drinks it, clapped and praised her for it! It works wonderfully!

Else, u can give your toddler a spoon with water and ask her to feed u at the same time you feed her. It will work too!

Hmmm.. isn't medicine sweet? We usually don't give sweet stuff to our kid when he gets to taste the medicine syrup (just a bit first), we exclaimed and wow-ed saying how cold, sweet and nice it was and he was so pleased that he wanted more. So now we don't have an issue.

Sometimes even when he got well, he asked why we stopped giving him medicine!

For my boy cannot force, he will hold the med in his mouth and spit out! Now I will measure the med and put it into a small container (those small plastic ones hawker use to put chilly, bought from SKP) and then I use another one of the container and put a chewy mutivits or sweet. When he finish the med then he can get the sweets.

I gave my son 21 months those bitter tcm medicine. He swallow without effort. Initially we forced down his throat. He don't like the feeling of force and is willing to take via syring with the promise of ribena sweet after each dose. Now he looks forward to sweet after he takes his medicine.

We use different containers for him to drink from. Sometimes it works. If it's orange colored I call it Elmo juice. Sometimes we give bribes- ie sweets after he drinks. Sometimes distract him and shove him the med in a spoon in between other food. Good luck.
