Epidural or Not???

Dear mommies,

Are you considering to have epidural or not? I'm having mixed feedback from my friends and families.
Our mom and granny's generation don't have epidural at all, and they gave birth to us. Based on that, i thought it should be fine without epidural. But when i watch documentaries on TV, these ladies without epidural cries like hell... then i hesitated... What do you think? Are you planning to have epidural?

I guess will have as I have heard that labour pain is the most painful thing that one can experience... all my friends have the epidural.. only risky thing I heard is that if the doc do not administer the jab well.. there will be complications after....

I think it depends on your level of threshold for pain. Don't decide now and be open for options. One the day of delivery if you can't take the pain then ask for one. That's what I am planning to do too.

opt for epidural. Otherwise you will regret..
on the day,if too pain then ask for 1 is already too late.
it is not effective anymore.

back ache is depend how u disicipline yourself during conferment period.
Not bathing, not expose to aircon and fan.have enough rest as much as possible.

I didn't take epidural the first time round. Pain was bearable for me. Also it also depends how long would ur labour be.
Mine was about 3hrs. This time 2nd round, i'll try not to take it too.

thank you mommies... yah, i'm planning to go without as well.... will try to do more exercise to prepare for the big day. hopefully a short labor.
i don't have much discipline in me.. :p
can't bath? no way at all.

Did Epi on my 1st delivery, lucky i did as my labor is 23hrs.... next apr will be 2nd delivery... no qns ask... confirm will take to have a painless delivery..haha..

I had epidural for both csect. No backache no side effects. I shower every few days, slept in Aircon room, walk around at home in tshirt n shorts barefoot during confinement.

My gynae told me backache caused by bad posture during care of baby coz we always bend down to change diaper.

Try for no epi but keep options open to epi if the pain is unbearable.

I took epidural and din regret taking that I guess.. Don't think I experience any backache since delivery in jan this year. :)

i took epi at 7cm dilation and went from hell to heaven.. hahaha.. i had backache after my confinement but was due to bad posture like changing diapers, bathing bb and carrying baby. def not related to epi. my mum also had backache after i went back to work cos she took over my duties on weekdays. so, yup, backache is not related to epi.

i heard that one of the after effects of epidural is skin allergy.. anyone experienced that before?

I took epi for my no. 1 because I am quite pain intolerant type.
I can stand slight pain but I just don't wish to experience pregnancy pain in case it traumatize me and I don't dare to give birth ever again.
As long as you rest well and minimize bending your back, you won't get back ache.

Hi Mommies,

I faced the samel confusion if to take epidural or not...but trust me it is one of the best pain relief method for labor pains...Doctor gave me a disclaimer before giving it and took my consent that it may have hazardous side effect, chances of which are rare but possible.......however when nurses comes and check cervix, the pain itself is so unbearable that it made me to take decision to opt for epidural...

They will stick needle in ur spine..it is like a hard pin prick first and little pain...once needle is inserted...its much more convienent as you can bear ur contractions pain very easily....I totally support epidural...there is no need to go thru immense pain for this wonderful expeirience...i also took gas ..but it only made me high as if I'm down with 3 bottle of wine ...lol :D

However, once I delivered, there was good pain in my back...but it will go off in a day.... dont worry..go for epidural... :)

I opted for epidural for my #1 and #2. However, during #2, perhaps I was too tensed that the needle poke into the wrong gap in the spine. It was painful as hell. So it was 2nd time then go in. Still shivering at the thoughts of it.. haha.

This is my first pregnancy, thinking to go for natural birth with epidural. How long will epidural last and will it be a pain free delivery? Thanks

First of all congratulations!!
Epidural will stay during your whole contractions till your cervix is fully open and durin you pushes for baby to come out.. Epidural is removed once your baby is out from your body..

Yes epidural give you 90% pain relief, you will not feel any contractions pain, even while pushing you just feel a pressure but no pain.
In short you can enjoy your labor with epidural :) all d best

Thanks so much for the reply
Will I need to tell the nurse if my epidural was used up? As heard from my friends as they have long labour, they kept topping up their epidural!!!

I will be giving birth in TMC by Dr Adrain Woodworth, anybody have any childbirth experience in TMC by him?

Btw is there any best time to take the epidural? First time mum hence super worry & scare to go thru natural birth.....
Initially I want a c-section, but hope I won't make a wrong decision to go natural!!
Thanks!!!!

Better take epidural when ur first contractions start as later when contractions are stronger it's difficult to give epidural as u can't keep ur body still.. U cannot shake ur body when given epidural.. So best to take it initially!

Nurse will give u a device to increase epidural dose urself when pain is more and unbearable.. And it will top up the dose automatically... Don't panic it will be fine.. Keep thinking positive ! All d best

Do u mean that the needle will be connected to the spine all through out the delivery ? Scary !!!! What if we accidentally inject more ??

my cervix to open took a long time..almost 8 hours...cervix should be 10 cm to start baby to push.....i reached hospital when i was 3 cm...hence took 8 hours as doctors say that every hour 1 cm gets open....so approximately...8 - 9 hours...

yep...needle will be connected thruout the delivery...it sounds scary,...even in the youtube video of epidural..it looks scary..but dont worry....when they insert it at the beginning ..it will be just a pin prick...and lil pain if u r sensitive to pain.....once needle is inserted...u dont feel it at all...rather u are quite comfortable laying on ur back with needle at ur back..they do some packing at the back.....well after that a device is given to u to increase dose...whenevr pain is more..u can increase the dose...no harm if u accidently increase the dose....dont worry..can private message me if u wanna talk further ...can have a short call or something....good luck :)

Thanks for the info :) , i still have another 4 months to go :) , will sure message you if I have more doubts :)

Hihi

Before giving epidural...these risks are discussed....but chances are quite rare..and considered to be 90% safe....well it depends on person to person....i wanted to enjoy my labor and did not want it to be stressful and painful where m crying n loathing in pain and thn shouting to do c-section in middle..coz i cant stand pain....well its personal choice if to take epidural or not...i've taken it and enjoyed my labor :)

Alternatively, ladies could also prepare themselves for labour and birth by attending childbirth education classes such as hypnobirthing and/or hire a doula. :)
The key to a satisfying birth is to have knowledge about the labour and birth process and make informed decisions. Be an active participant of birth.

I will take epidural for sure, but isit true that we can increase or adjust the dosage? If the epidural finishing, do we need to ask for top up? I heard some say that by the time when you are about to deliver, the nurses/doctor will reduce the dosage.... !

Yep we can increase the dosage.. Can't decrease though! Epidural will last till you push the baby out... After that it will not be in affect and slowly it will be removed...I remember my epidural was not in affect once baby was outside coz thn I could feel the pain in my Lowe abdomen... Don't worry u can beat that pain as u gonna see ur sweetheart after 9 months :d

hi
just share some experiences here. am having c section and I have took the spinal epidural .
I have delivered at TMC last year. The experience overall was good. The anesthesia is a very experience doc .
It was painless when he put the needle at my back. The next moment I was "knock out".
the feeling was like when you are drunk and feel asleep the next moment.
My hubby still thought I was on full 100% sedation. But the fact is I am on half body numb .
Throughout the whole process, I was asleep and only awake when my baby is out.
So anesthesia doc also is a very important factor. they will know how to increase the dosage to make you feel painless.
good luck and enjoy your second trimester:)

Hi everyone. I am a 2013 Dad.

Just to share my experience. I was in the delivery ward with wifey awaiting our little one. We have already decided we want epidural.

As the contractions came, my wife asked for it. The nurses came with a disclaimer form about the possible side effects. To be honest, i was a bit hesitant after reading the form. However my wife was in quite a bit of pain and we decided to go ahead.

Horrors of horrors, the doctor did not administer it correctly. She continued to suffer the pain for the next 3 hours as the nurses desperately try to figure out why is she not feeling more comfortable. I too can feel her pain as I watch a machine with some numbers that is supposed to measure her contractions.

We decided to call the doctor back. It is not a residential doctor and he goes to other hospitals too. By the time he came back, it was a good 4 hours. He readministered it and my wife feel asleep immediately.

The nurses came in periodically to check her dilation and when the time was right, they woke her up.

"Eh wake up wake up. time to push liao."

And a quick 10 minutes later, our little one arrived safely and healthy into planet earth.

I personally salute those mommies that went without epidural. I will no longer compare NS to pregnancy again. :)

Hi simplelad, I should ask my hubby to read your last sentence about the NS thingy.

Hi cshkat08, 1stTimeMommy, I am mother of 3 kids. All without epidural. I have decided not to go with epidural since beginning of pregnancy, when the time came for 1st one, I was actually asking for it. haha... But the nurse told me it was too late to give me as it will only take effect around 1 hour later and I was dilated at 9cm at that time. So, naturally, I did opt for epidural for 2nd and the 3rd baby. I felt good after delivery and breast feed /baby wearing with correct posture, so till now, I don't have any backache (touch wood).

If you can, go without epidural, I believe recovery will be faster too.

It is best to request for the epidural to be turned down when a mum is fully dilated so that she can feel the urge to bear down and follow her urges efficiently. If mum is not able to bear down well, that's when the doc might suggest an instrumental delivery (vacuum or forceps) and that might cause more trauma to mum and baby.

I think that all Daddies should be in the delivery room and not hiding beside mommy, but getting the full view from the gynae's side.

I think it made me much more tolerant of my wife for the days to come, I find that I tend to give in more after witnessing the birth of my baby boy. :)

simplelad

which hospital did your wife deliver?
But I can say,,NS is nothing compare to we went thru pregnancy.
Really is a experience to go thru.

hahaha....simplelad
I agreed with you. That is how my hubby behave nowadays!
he witnessed the whole process and he think I am very 伟大。
hahaha.

@marc jacob may I ask why do you want to know? If it is because of the administering of the epidural, please dont make your choice of hospital based on our experience. Like I mentioned, the anesthetist is not a resident one and sometimes such things happen and it isnt anyone to blame.

The hospital was a fantastic one with all very warm and loving nurses.

Hi mamalavia, thanks for your feedback but I can't imagine without the epidural as my pain threshold was super low.. At first I had decided for c-section to 'feel' the pain only after childbirth, but now.. I'm willing to give a try with epidural natural birth!! My gynae said I can have epidural any time of my contraction, so I will ask for it once I was there. I heard even checking of cervix is damn painful?!!
Hopefully like Samaria said, I must keep thinking of my 9 months sweetheart!! btw, Samaria, which hospital you went last time?

@cshkat08
Yep cervix checkup is also very painful.. Atleast for me coz m also very sensitive to pain :(

I went to KK hospital on private rates.. Overall experience was nice as the lady doctor who gave me anesthesia was quite encouraging and helped me overcome the fear of epidural side effects .. Actually before giving epidural u as told all the side effects of same which scared me and my husband but thanks to that lady doc who gave me lots of encouragement and share positive stories then :)

I will go for epidural for my next pregnancy also.. Hehe..Coz I enjoyed every bit of contractions, labor, cervix checkup, pushes and stitches which I would not have sustained without it :)

Hi cshkat08, it's more on personal preference, I was scared of pain and didn't know what my pain threshold was, but managed to go through all three of them. So, depends on yourself, just enjoy everyone moment of becoming mother and there are still long way to go there after. :)

Dear mummy

I did a c sect and had epidural. Personally I think its not the epidural side effect, its how u do your confinement and take care of ur back after giving birth. Just eat and stay healthy!

All the best dear!

just note that when you take epidural, anything can still happen... pls note especially if you want normal birth

my gynae advised me to take epidural as she thought it would help my cervix relax and dilate faster. this was my 1st baby.

unfortunately, turned out that 18 hours after i was admitted, i dilated to 6cm only. she then suggested c-section to prevent me from "tiring out". :(

i read that some mummies' bodies respond very quickly to epidural and dilate easily after that. guess i wasn't one of them!
