Duphaston

Dear mummies-to-be,
I am 6 weeks pregnant and a first time ivf success story. I've been prescribed Duphaston and I feel ill on it. When brushing my tongue I wanna gag (this never happens), my tongues so feels furry and food tastes weird, my tummy is bloated (I feel as if I am suffering from motion sickness) and in the morning and night I feel like vomiting but can't. I have lost my appetite but am forcing myself to eat.

This long weekend has almost passed, but I've spent it horizontal on my couch all day because I feel discomfort and there is gas stuck in my stomach.

Does anyone here have the same condition? And has any solution to make this feel better? I tried taking the pill before food and taking the pill after food to see if there's a difference - nope there isn't. Similarly awful feelings after.

I'm thinking of stopping the medication, I'm miserable. Tomorrow's my scan, the doctor will scan to try to hear any heartbeat. Fingers crossed.

I will also ask if I can stop the medication. I still have half a month to go. So dreadful!

Under Pregnancy Category :

This drug is category C

Category C :
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

IVF has high risk of miscarriage. Thus, your doctor prescribed it. But the medication does not 100% prevent miscarriage.

Miscarriage can cause by many factors, not just hormone.

You need to evaluate the risks and benefits. Talk to your doctor.

All the best.

This product is indicated in women trying to conceive if there is proven, documented deficiency of the progesterone hormone (during luteal phase). Once conception has taken place, progesterone hormone is indicated only in pregnancies due to assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF etc. or in cases of habitual abortion (repeated miscarriages). Misuse and overuse of progesterone can lead to a number of side effects including fetal death and spontaneous abortion (more so in the first three months of gestation), masculinisation of female fetus (such as unwanted hair on face), birth defects in babies such as cleft palate and heart defects. Therefore in the United States, the use of progesterone during "known or suspected pregnancy" is banned. During pregnancy, one should take the most minimal mandatory medicines such as folic acid 5mg daily (such as Folet). If there is anaemia, then one should take an iron preparation along with folic acid (such as Probofex), one capsule a day.

All pregnant women shall not take medication at all, not even fever reducing medicine. Even have to take, take the minimal.

ALL medicine have side-effect. The best is to check the Pregnancy Category.

FDA Pregnancy Categories
The FDA has established five categories to indicate the potential of a drug to cause birth defects if used during pregnancy. The categories are determined by the reliability of documentation and the risk to benefit ratio. They do not take into account any risks from pharmaceutical agents or their metabolites in breast milk. The categories are:
Category A
Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters).
Category B
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Category C
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Category D
There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Category X
Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.
Category N
FDA has not classified the drug.

hey Stacy, how many tabs of duphaston are u on ?

The discomfort u are feeling could also be due to hormonal changes as u are pregnant , and not the duphaston itself though the duphaston may make it worse. If u are on a high dose of it, see if u can taper it if ur appt goes on fine tmr. (My exp with duphaston - was taking it 3 times a day previously cos of a bleeding incident at wk 6. was on that dose till wk 8, and after that it was tapered down to 1 tablet a day. Was feeling ok , just a bit tired, bloated and ocassional vomitting between wks 6 to 8. MS came in worse at wk 8 and i was puking every day till wk 18 tho i stopped my duphaston way before that).

Hi gemmahedging
I'm on 2 daily. I took one after lunch cos I didn't wanna let my baby down but I'm getting another weird side effect, like palpitations or feeling nervous. This is taking away my joy. :( lying down all day. Maybe you're right and it's pregnancy symptoms. Can't wait to see the doc tomorrow.

Thanks for replying x

Hi StacyHF,

I was also prescribed duphaston when I spotted at 6ish weeks. I only had to take one pill at night but it made me so sick throughout the day that I was immobilised on the couch. I spoke to my obgyn, who said it doesn't prevent miscarriages 100% but helps to support the pregnancy, and after discussing with my husband, I decided to go off it.

And my morning sickness stayed with me ever since. Gah.

Hi! My doc told me that the pill makes the morning sickness more obvious. I've been feeling much better now so I am continuing.
