Dr Benjamin Tham from TMC

hi Daphne,
that's sound interesting, how i wish i have a soundwave of my darling heartbeat when he is inside me. must remember to bring your thumbdrive along.

last time at AMK clinic, he need to use a dolpper (don't know whether i spell correctly) to let patient listen to their baby's heartbeat. but this scanner is a allin1, can listen to heartbeat.

Wait till later stage, it's can even show the facial features of your baby. I saw how my baby look like in one of the scans. Very accurate. nothing like 3D or 4D scans but very close. since don't need to pay extra, think it's good enough.

I am also seeing Dr Tham at TMC now. Comparing to KKH, the environment is kind of old and cramp at TMC. i had my reservation towards the hospital as I had friends who had bad experience at TMC during her delivery. Anyone tried seeing Dr Tham at TMC but give birth at KKH with extra cost? I am considering to do that, but would like to know about the pros and cons (ie. after delievery, Dr might not be able to assess my condition the next day as I am not in the preferred hospital etc?)

Tiffany,

Think giving birth in TMC is not tat bad. A lot of ppl is saying tat the service of the nurses is much better than KKH. Is this yr first child or have u gave birth in KKH before? A lot of ppl also have bad experence in KKH, so it actually depends...

My first child was born in KKH and I opt for A class ward. But the service of the nurses at KKH is really lousy. Esp at nite, it's really hard to find nurses at the counter. Think private hospital will hv better service. So, really not sure if you wanna pay extra for tat.

This is my second pregnancy. My first baby, i give birth at kkh, environment at delivery suite is alot of privacy. My frd told me the delivery suite at TMC is terrible, and you could practically hear the next door patient screaming as well. The thought of that sends fear down my spine..

hi tiffany,

i don't think it's possible to give birth in KKH under dr tham even with extra cost. u can check with him during one of the consultation.

Other than TMC, Mt Alvernia is another hospital that Dr tham can deliver.

During the day of my delivery, there are many babies being born. So instead of being in the delivery ward from the start of my delivery till the end. i was placed in an observation ward until 2hrs before my delivery. My labor was long and there are many babies born that day. Heard from friends who gave birth in TMC, and via induced and less popular date, they were in the delivery ward right from the start.

however, it's doesn't really bother me. i think the gyane is more important than hospital and overall TMC's nurses and midwives are quite nice and experienced.

Not possible to see Dr Tham at TMC but give birth at KKH with extra cost cos I asked him b4 I switched to TMC at my 35 weeks. I just given birth in TMC, I did not hear people screaming in the labour ward leh... unless u r talking about the obeservation room where 3-4 patients shared to do the CTG... Labour ward is very private to me... First birth so can't compare between kk and TMC...

Hi daphne,
I am also in the Jan 11 mtb thread.

Going to TMC tomorrow for the OSCAR test and for my next checkup with Dr Tham. Will definitely remember to bring my thumbdrive so I can get all those amazing pictures!

I'm happy to hear that Dr Tham is so capable at stitching since I'm a first time mum and I went to see him based on the recommendation from my GP. I felt very comfortable with him and I have no basis for comparison so sticking with him. But its still nice to get reassurance!

Hi luckymummy,

Nvr notice from the chart tat you got the same gynae as me... Haha..

Yeah, Dr Tham is really good & assuring. For my first boy, I'm always worrying about things but after seeing him every appt, I always felt so much better. So, when he went into private practice in May, I still decide to follow him..

Daphne,

When I first saw him in May, I think he had very few patients so was able to see him very promptly every time. Nowadays can tell he is more busy already, good for him, but now I have to wait a bit longer.

My oscar test today went ok, except that baby was not cooperative, refused to get into position and I had to get up and walk around, drink water, have my stomach jiggled etc. Finally the radiologist managed to get some decent pictures. The best part is, by the time I went to see Dr Tham, he said baby was in a very good position! So maybe my baby behaves for Dr Tham, but not the radiologist. :p

Btw, anyone here knows how long it takes for the blood test results to come out after doing the Oscar test?

luckymummy, I went for my oscar test just one day before u. Think the blood test results will take a few days. But Dr Tham said tat if no one contact me, means good news.

Anyway, did u ask the sonographer about yr results for the NT scan?

Hi beary, for Dr Tham's clinic at TMC, they will issue an appt booklet for u. But they will not call to remind u also. So u will need to refer to yr booklet.

I heard a lot of ppl mentioned tat John Tee is a very busy man. Maybe he got too many patients under him. Think it's not a bad idea to follow Dr Tham also.

Daphne,

Read about your results from the other thread, good that you are so positive! Guess it's good to know sooner rather than later? And it's really no point worrying now.
I had a call from TMC saying the nuchal measurement is safe, but I think nothing was mentioned about the blood test yet. Just cross my fingers.

sheryl,
Do you already have a regular GP/gynae for medical checkups? Unless you are concerned about a prior condition etc that affects fertility or the baby's potential health, I think your yearly medical checkups should be good enough? I know I should have done those thorough tests before conceiving but was too lazy. haha. For peace of mind it could be reassuring to do a thorough checkup, especially if your husband is cooperative. I know I would have had problems dragging mine down for a check.

As for the packages, you can only take them up after week 12 I think, so seeing him before that costs you on average 60-80 for consultation fees per time. And Dr Tham didn't discuss the package with me, he directed me to the nurse outside at the counter for details, so if that is your primary purpose then seems a bit of a waste of money.

One thing I highly recommend is to start your folic acid supplements now. I read that certain studies show a lower incidence of morning sickness amongst mothers who started folic acid before conception. Not sure if it's 100% true, but it worked for me, only slight nauseous feeling at night before bed. Anyway it is good for the baby as you do not know exactly when you will conceive but the baby needs folic acid immediately to build up the spinal cord.

sheryl,

No problem, we are all here to exchange info.

I don't know if even the nurses have time to entertain you, they seem Always busy. Maybe you and hubby can sign up for those pre-natal checkups, I actually wanted to go for the one offered by the polyclinics, but my husband couldn't find the time as they only operate mon-fri, and sat half day. The test is quite comprehensive, will do all the major illness checks but I don't think they cover fertility testing. Private GPs and gynaes should offer this too. Maybe you can call TMC to see if they offer such a health check?

Don't stress about it yet, after all you haven't even tried. I suppose the doctors will tell your husband to stop smoking (standard advice) for better chances of conception.

My folic acid is taken as part of my vitamin B supplement, I order online from iherb.com. This brand country life contains 800mcg which is 200% of the daily recommended intake. Actually I find it a bit too fishy now that I'm pregnant and sense of smell is amazing, but no choice I know it's good for me n baby so just gulp it down with a sweet drink. Think you can buy plain folic acid off the counter from guardian/nature's farm etc, but they are pricier compared to online sources.

Hi luckymummy, yeah, I'm patiently waiting for mid of next mth for my amnio test.

Sheryl, I bought my folic acid from polyclinic. It cost $1.50 for 1 mth's supply. Not sure if it's exp or not. It's good to start taking now since you decide to TTC.

my gf just passed me a bottle of "prenatal formula with iron" GNC women's caplets.does that mean i dont have to look for folic acid anymore because the bottle says 1000mcg of folic acid,600 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vit D-3.take 2 with food daily.
what do you think?

Starfruit12, Dr Tham ever send me email to inform about his new clinic. The email address is [email protected]. Not sure if he will reply, but maybe u can try? Or you can call his clinic at 65) 625 34122 /6174 to check with the nurses there. Hope these infos are useful to u.

Daphne,

Hope everything will go fine at the test.
$1.5 for a month of folic acid seems real cheap!

Sheryl,
I hate popping pills so I prefer to take all in ones if possible. The ones from your friend should be ok since it contains the recommended amts of folic acid and calcium. Not sure about the added iron cos it can cause constipation. But maybe the amount is minimal?

starfruit,
duphaston is the "an tai yao" or the anti-nausea one? I rem being given it as well, but I hardly took the pills Dr Tham prescribed cos trying to be as natural as possible.
