Chin Leng, PLS TAKE NOTE!!!

Chin Leng,

I think to stop all these self promo, you should encourage the mummies here not to support this thread, in this case, these people will back out eventually.

The problem with this business people is that they make use of this forum to earn profits without having to spend $$ going into advertising.

By discouraging such practice, the only way we can do is work as a team and not buy from them.

I do hope that each time when you are alerted of such thread, to remove them totally rather than to let it keep going.

One method other forums used to prevent abuse is only allow members with more than a certain no. of post (eg. 50 post) in order to post message in marketplace.

Will that help?

Hi Chin Leng,

some more threads on self biz.... and most of the threads mentioned above are still rampant.

I understand that it might be difficult for you to act upon it on a short notice so I feel you could maybe appoint some help to assist u in policing the threads. This will cut down the number of self-business threads significantly.

Alternatively, what Suggestion mentioned abt the 50 posts criteria is a good idea, I feel.

Thats quiet a good suggestion! It would prevent those with self-biz to keep creating a new id & start promoting again. Or even better, only allow members with more than a certain number of posts to ACCESS the marketplace.

Allowing members access market fourm after initial post is not a perfect idea. Cos if these people really want to promote their biz in the forum, they can do a fictitious signup. So eventually, biz promo will still float in this forum.

I think the only way to solve this issue is hoping Chin Leng can remove thread immediately upon advice from members of this forum of self promo ad.

It also needs the co-operation of the members here not to support such biz.

I agree that only members with a minimum number of posts should be allowed to post in the marketplace. I would suggest minimum 200 posts. This is to prevent fraud and cheating. I know other forums are implementing this restriction.

Well, granted that allowing members access to the market forum after a initial number of posts may not be a perfect idea, BUT at least it does act as a form of deterence for those self-biz owners who are looking to make a fast buck here.

NO form of prevention can be 100% fool-proof. No matter what the admin implements, some bugger will eventually find a way to go around the system and exploit it. But currently the idea of allowing ppl access to the market forum after a ficed number of postings, seem to be the most logical and cost-effective way of wedding out these cheapskates.

Of course the best way is for Chin Leng to delete the thread and revoke the thread-starte's membership immediately but this too has its own difficulties. One, what's stopping these people from re-registering another nick and doing the same thing all over again. Two, it's exhausting to police the forum 24 hours, every hour, every minute, every second. Chin Leng could hire some help to assist in cleaning up the forum but this will definitely increase the operating costs and overheads; and this may 'force' Chin Leng to charge an annual memebership fee to all of us if we want to post on this forum. Is this what we want?

Hence, I really believe the best way thus far is to allow sellers to advertise for their own personal stuff after posting a minimum number of posts. This is to weed out those cheapskates like ROSEBUD. And of course, the next best way is to ask all forum users to boycott this self-biz 'cos to borrow a quote, if the buying stops, the selling will too.

Hi all,

I've read the suggestion regarding having a minimum number of postings first before a user can participate in the "Marketplace and Exchange Corner" category. There are two reasons why I've not implmented the idea:

1. I would not like to penalise genuine participants who really want to sell their personal items but have not been active in the forum.

2. I am also concern that the possiblity that instead of posting in the "Marketplace and Exchange Corner" category, the sales and promotion thread would be posted in every other category which does not have any restriction. Alternatively, this may also encourage a user to post many many repeated messages just to reach the quota before posting in the category.

I am actually looking into getting volunteer moderators to help remove sales and promotion threads by non-advertisers in the forum. However, before we do that, we'll need to setup a system for the moderators to log their actions so that we can always refer to it if any queries arise. We are actually in the midst of setting up the system. Once it is ready, we'll be looking for volunteer moderators.

Thank you all for the support. Really, really appreciate them.

Regards,
Chin Leng.

I refer to the post by guest123, how come the person knows the website and the auction link so well....

Hi Q,

Maybe guest123 came across the same pictures while browsing Yahoo! Auctions?

Regards,
Chin Leng.
