Hi Stinzy

Don't worry! You can consider engaging in ABA therapy sessions like what others have said. My son was suspected with ASD but we only started therapy sessions last year because of the cost. We regretted not starting therapy early because I have seen kids who started early and improved a whole lot before they reach primary school. To the point where they could socialise, though not perfect.

Now, we have been doing home-based ABA therapy sessions because we found a private therapist with affordable fees. It has been 6 months (twice a week) and he is doing so well now!

Hope you found this informative! Start therapy early! Even if your child is not yet diagnosed or waiting for a consultation!

Hi JoosRCool,

Did u get ur kid diagnose before attending the therapy session? How old is ur kid now? Is he is school alr?

DS is 6. We didn't get him diagnosed officially because we didn't want him to get labelled. Heard that once labelled, he cant get insurance? :(. We managed to get a psychologist friend to take a look at him and she suspected it was ASD too. Once she confirmed our views, we were deciding what kind of intervention is best (we were deciding on cost, effectiveness and flexibility as we are both working). We settled on private therapy just to give it a try. He has been improving since, so for now I am waiting to see if he is able to get into a mainstream primary school next year.

Is the waiting time for KKH very long?

U mean u can't get insurance even if it's ASD? What are some of the tell tale signs?
The waiting time for kkh is abt 2 months I heard. We are also hesitating to see if we should get him diagnosed or wait for his teacher to alert us. My son is 4 this yr and jus starred school. . So we were thinking to give him more time and see if he will improve socially

About the insurance, I guess yeah :( But i'm not too sure about it as that is what I heard. It will also affect his future endeavors too like jobs because of the labelling. I don't know if people will support my action for not getting him officially diagnosed but for now, he is going strong :)

Tell-tale signs of ASD? Basic behaviors are repetitive behaviour (like to line up their toy cars, clapping of hands), lack of eye contact, delayed speech behavior and so much more others. ASD is very broad, its an entire range from mild to severe. But most of the time, you will be able to tell because his behavior does not seem to catch up with his age.

Hmm, since you are already considering with KKH. I would definitely say do therapy while waiting as it can improve his behavior too and prepare him for school. :)
 
Hi.
Regarding insurance, this is for sure you will have problem getting it especially medical insurance. I can't get any private insurance company for my son's medical insurance.
Hence I would suggest you to buy insurance for him before getting diagnosed officially.

Can anyone advise me if you know of any pre school in the north zone which can take in child with ASD?
My son is currently attending a special needs school in Bishan but they are shifting to East side so I urgently need to find another pre school for him.

Hi LA58, maybe you can try go polyclinic to get referral for EIPIC.
But the downside is the long waiting list. I'm not sure whether they offer 3-hour, half day or full day programme.
The upside is the relatively cheaper fees since subsidies are provided by the govt.

long time no post in smh, zzzz
my ds was diagnosed last yr with speech delay & pragmatic language impairment, as well as SPD...rojak i guess
his case is mild, but everyday is a struggle...he has very strong adhd signs, but the cdu@nuh dr told us that adhd can only be diagnoses at age 7 so im quite puzzled why some mummies here can get an adhd diagnosis before 7?

also, how do you find out how good a mainstream pri sch offers support for your special needs child? just email the school n ask?

im also taking essential oil, supplements approach on top of ST & OT, hes been with nuh for more than a yr now..hope next yr p1....we can make it

Me keen to meet up too but my son is not austistic just want him to mingle more as he is very shy and reserved and now 21 months talk very little so I am a little worried too

i have a primary 5 son who is doing a research study on the topic "what are the concerns of parents with special need children in singapore havr regarding the transition from preschool to primary school". He hopes to be a voice to MOE to incorporate programs in mainstream schools for special need students. He hopes that through this research prepare themselves and allievate any concerns parents might have if any special need child ever joins the school. Schools would also have a better understanding on how to take care of these students well. I'm new to this thread. I suspect my 6 years old boy has mild ADD/ADHD Howver, we find him quite normal except that he is abit talkative and sometimes like to interrupt people conversation. He is able to sit down and complete his homework probably (at least) half an hr. Basically we find him quite a obedient boy at home. However, in his CC the teachers complained that he is unable to pay attention during class and liked to disturb his classmates. He gets bored after awhile if the topic does not interest him. He likes more hands on activity and is gd at drawing.

Previously, we switch him from another CC to current CC as the prev CC teacher always find fault with my boy and punish him for not able to sleep during nap time and cases of teacher abuse. His current CC teacher were more patience with him and we had see some improvement. I am still thinking if I should bring him for assessment for ADD/ADHD? My hubby was totally against as he felt that my boy was normal and he has shown improvement and felt it was not necessary. I like to know if my boy was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD after assessment by specialist, will it leave a bad record to him?

Will it be a long term treatment?

Hi mummies with learning difficulties kids.

When my son was at P2, teacher advised me to get my son for a check as his attention span was short and he was not able to read well. I went to DAS and with a few questions and test, they claimed that he was dyslexic. Place him in the dyslexia classes for a year but it dun help much. He still cant read...i drop him off DAS as his school has a program for dyslexic student. To my surprise, he can read well but still very weak in writting. When he was P4 which is now..his dyslexic teacher recommended me to REACH for an assessement as my son still cant pay attention. Me and my son went through an interview, after a week or 2, the officer confirm rhat my has has ADD and made an appointment for me and my son to see a doc in SGH. Without asking anymore questions, the doc claimed that my son needs medication. This medication can only control his attention span for 4-6 hours. It will be a long term medication. I was rather uncomfortable about it coz by a few questions, they are able to tell that a child has ADHD/ADD. I went to google about the side effects of the medication. It terrifies me! Besides the chances of have headache, insomia, stomach pain, there may be a rebound effect. Gosh! The rebound effect was the most terrifying one. So i quickly left SGH without taking the medicine. I would rather give him omega 3 and play some focusing games with him.
If your child is glued to tv programmes, ipad or computer games then its time to cut off the gargets and im still trying hard on this to my boy.
 
I've had much success with my home based therapist, i recently moved back from HK and resumed using them, its amazing how my kids have picked up although there has been a gap.

I am now looking for Art lessons to complete their home therapy. Been so out of touch looking for classes, any help is appreciated

Any suggestions?

What kind of home-based therapy are you looking for? There are many kinds available; but it depends on what you want for your kid :)
 
My girl has GDD in speech & social interaction skill. She has attention span and throw tantrum. She has a strong character and mind, most of the time doesn't comply. Looking for a childcare near her intervention centre but I still have a baby to handle. Feel very exhausted.
 
Hi, I am new here and glad to know you all. My son is 2.5 yrs and was diagnosed with ASD and GDD, by KKH. He is having early intervention 5 days/week and 3 hours/day, private school, started 1 month ago. I would like to set up some activities for him in the afternoon. Do you have any suggestion which activities I can do for him? Many thanks.
 
Hi Mai Hoang! welcome! wow, looks like your son has it pretty busy already. How is he coping with it? Dont know if its too early and young, but you can try joining some social skills group. which area do you stay? some parents and centres do organise social skills group to bring their kids together.
 
Thanks JoosRCool. I still think he needs some activities to fill up his time in the afternoon, to keep him busy and engaged with other people all the time. He has been enjoying his intervention program quite a lot. I guess because teachers and therapists spend more time on him. I would love to join social skills groups or play groups of mothers in this topic. I am living near Pasir Panjang MRT :)
 
My boy is suspected of ADHD, gotten an informal assessment. Childcare teachers have been complaining about him for the past 2 years. Today the teacher kind of cross the line by implying that my son is not hyperactive, she thinks that there is probably something wrong with his IQ.

My husband & I feel that he has improved a lot as he tried very hard to control himself in class. Well, guess the teachers think that it's not good enough as he is behaving very differently from his peers. I think the teachers assume that all children should behave in a certain orderly manner, otherwise you will be considered the nuisance.

Parents here care to share full day childcare centres that are ADHD friendly? I heard ywca does accept children with development/ learning delay? Have any parents sent their children there? Appreciate for kind feedback.
