Hello Ladies,

I just want to do a quick survey with you gals. I just wanted to ask if any of you (or anyone you know) have ever considered going abroad for fertility treatments and what circumstances, if any, would you consider going to another country to access IVF or IUI or some other Assisted reproductive technologies there.

Just if you have some thoughts, opinion or info on the matter, I would be very grateful!

Baby dust to everyone here..

What would your reasons be for doing so? Cost? Success rate? Different laws?

IVF is rather time consuming. There are frequent visits for ultrasound follow-up, multiple injections etc. will you be able to stay in the foreign country for that duration? Do you have a support network there? Or are you able to travel to-and-fro?

Have you considered the success rates of these foreign centres? Protocols? Each country may have slightly different laws on assisted reproduction too - do make sure you know what is being offered.

Thanks so much for answering me twinkle, I was just considering if somebody thought of going to Johor Bahru, or KL Malaysia or maybe Thailand for lesser cost and lesser wait time because it is a little bit expensive here..

Married to a Filipino foreigner so Manila is also an option.. Have family and friends there..

Wasn't there a write-up in the papers (straits times) recently about IVF in Johor? You could give it a try... Should be cheaper, just the hassle of travelling to and fro...

Hi BabyDee

Would like to share my thoughts with you.

I'm a M'sian but I decided against doing IVF here as its really not on par with Singapore. Because other than finding a good Dr, the IVF facility must have top-notch embryologists working in the labs. The Dr is responsible for prescribing your level of stimulation and surgically remove your oocytes which is very important, but more importantly I find, is for the lab to do an excellent job in cultivating your embryos, otherwise there's no point if your embryos are not healthy and maximised.
I went to Prof Ng at Gleneagles for my IVF. He is a pioneer in this field, the first Dr to produce an IVF baby in Asia. His lab is filled with embryologists who all have doctorate degrees, so you know you are in good hands.
I know cost is an issue, but sometimes if you have to do 2 or 3 cycles abroad, the cost might be equivalent to one cycle in Sg.
I really hope you find a good IVF specialist. But I would really not recommend JB. KL might be a better choice.

All the best!

Thanks so much for answering my query, Ica, Diana and Twinkle!

From what I read in the other forums they say that well known Singaporean embryologist , Dr.Angela Ho also has clinic in Manila and JB..

But if specialization is really not there, I'd rather not travel..Or I'll wait for feedback about other places..

thanks so much.

I will give this some more thought..
