Hi to all experienced mothers,am a first time mum to be and would like to know what brands of baby products which are safe, reliable and durable for the items below:-

1.Baby Stroller/Car Seat
2.Baby Cot
3.Baby Products (e.g. bottles(plastic or
glass)/breast pumps/sterilizer)
4.Other baby products

It would be great to be able to share this thread with other first time mothers to be with the advice from experienced mothers.

Hello..

3. Baby products ;
- Glass bottles : This can speed up the time taken to warm up the expressed breast milk. You can get these FOC from hospitals.
- Plastic bottles : Avent(BPA free) or Nuk bottles are good.
- Breast pumps :A vent manual pump is good. Electric ones, think is Medela. Am using Avent electric pump for myself.
- Sterilizer : Avent. As recommended by my hospital.

Am using Avent products for bottles, sterliser and pump. This is so because, I do not have to worry abt bottles unable to fit in sterliser/unable to fit in the pump. Felt that avent products are widely available and so far, still ok to me.

4. Other baby products. What products are you looking at? Diaper? Wipes?

Diaper : Am using PETPET diapers. One of the cheaper brands of diaper. So far ok. No leakage. Best is to change the diaper every 4 hrs or so. To prevent rashes/hygiene reason. Theory is same as why women change the pad so often.
Which brand of diaper also depends on the baby's butt. Some are allergic and can only use certain brands.
For me, when baby still newborn, I got a packet of diaper from each of the brands for baby to try.

Wipes : Kodomo, cheap and good. Pigeon seems nice to use too but more expensive than Kodomo. If you are on budget, suggest to use cotton balls. Alternatively, you can get a roll of cotton from medical hall (cheaper than getting from ntuc), cut into square size and then soak in cool boiled water. Works the same way as wipes. Just way way way cheaper. One roll of cotton can lasts 2 mths for me (considering that newborns poo so very often). You can also use this cotton to wipe baby's face before bath.

Milk bags : Not very economical in the long run. Though you can get these from the WTB/WTS/BP Threads. Used to use milk bags initially. Then found out 'milk trays'. Pump out the milk, pour into milk trays. each cube in this stray is 1 ounce (30ml). Freeze them, when they become ice, transfer them into Ziploc bags (freezer save). And store in freezer. This save even more space than using milk bags.
Milk bags cant be reuse, milk trays can. one ziploc bag can store lots of cubes.

Baby carrier : Some swear by Baby Bjorn, Manduca. I have no idea. Not using both. Ideally to get one with good support for mama. Very tiring/aching for shoulders/back if using for few hours.

Hi Xinyue! You are absolutely fantastic for taking the time to explain. Greatly appreciated!

Anyways, i have a few questions:-
1.You recommended for breats pumps Avent manual and electric ones Medela however why are you using the electric Avent? Mind elaborating?
2.I was thinking of using napkins at the initial stages then switch to diapers. Any thoughts on that? Cos when i was young i remembered my mum using it and i guess it is more economical.
3. Any info on baby strollers(birth-3yrs)?
4. Any info on baby cots?

Look forward to hearing more from you!

Hello Lady..

Hope my post helps.

1) my Avent manual was a hand me down. Hubby saw that I took a long time to pump out the milk and sometimes, hands got tired. So He got me the avent electric one. This set can also be converted to a manual pump. My this model, cant adjust suction level. Medela is because, it seems quite popular with mummies here. Think you can adjust suction lvl for Medela

2. If you really really want to use napkin, make sure u have loads of them. (like 3 dozens) You will also need napkin liners. Why?
a) Newborns poo alot. anything from 6-8 times a day. Every time they poo, you need to change immediately. Their poo actually stains the napkin. So, washing the napkin can be a hassle. Some confinement ladies do not agree to using napkins.
Why napkin liners? Put this on top of the napkin before u wrap baby's butt with the napkin. This is supposed to help 'absorb' the poo. But sometimes, poop still leaks out and stain the napkin.

Bear in mind, if you use napkin, you have to change each time baby urines. And you will also need napkin cover to prevent leakage onto the mattress..

More economical, but think of all the washing (water bills, washing powder)

3. Strollers : Sorry not much info. Best is u can one which is suitable for newborns and up..

4. Cots : Sorry, also not much info. Am using a brand call Mama Love. Suggest you can get one which has different positions. As baby grows, u might need to adjust height of his cot. Some can convert to playpen, toddler bed. Those 3 or 4 in one kind of cot..

Hmm.. some ppl like to get THE FIRST FEW YEARS sleep positioner. So bb can co-sleep. Some, just put baby on a mattress on floor.

Personally for me, baby either slps with us or on the floor in same room as me (my room too small for a bb cot).

I did get a cot for bb. It is in a separate room. Being a paranoid mama, I m always afraid I cant hear bb crying if bb in a separate room. So ends up bb slp with me. seldom use the cot

All the above is my personal opinion. Not advertising for any one in particular.

Oh ya, if bb has sensitive skin, it might be better to use cotton to wipe bb's butt instead of wipes. Wipes may cause allergy. Just my opinion.

On using napkin : Alternatively, use diaper in initial stage. As bb grows along the way, # of poo becomes lesser. u can more or less catch the timing of his poo. then use napkin in day. when poo timing gets near, bring bb to potty?

Thank you so much! Greatly appreciated! How many kids do you have?
I was at the Baby Fair yesterday, was just browsing and getting to know more about the products available. I seem to like Medela breast pumps as they are able to fit other round neck bottles.
I understand your concerns about the napkins and i do agree with you i guess i will have to speak with either my mum about it and with other friends of mine who have kids. As i remembered all of us(my siblings) used napkins during our first few months.

Oh forgot to check with you, are you using any electric bottle steamer?

Hi Adeline,

1. Stoller: you can buy stroller depend on budget.

2. Baby cot: i am forget the brand, but my cot can convert into toddler bed.

3. Baby product.
*Bottle: I am using NUK for both my kids.
*Breastpump: Ameda lactaline (it serves me good since my 1st kid till now - 2.5 years plus now)
*Sterilizer: NUK. Can fit wide neck bottle too.
*Bottle steamer: pigeon steamer.

4. Other baby product.

Baby Carier: i am using Baby Sling (Babby Safe brand) when baby is NB till 5 months, then I switch into ERGO carrier when baby around 5.5 or 6 months.

Baby diaper cream: Desitin cream (blue color). Use it everytime after change diaper.

Baby soap: J&J top to toe.

Welcome Mrs Yee! Am feeling the same way as you being a first time mum myself! When are you due?

Hi Novi, thanks for the valuable info. For baby stroller we are looking into Pre-Prego,Quinny or Inglesina.

For baby cots, my hubby n i were at the Baby fair and found this store which carries a wide selection of baby cots which can be converted into toddler bed. It's called Casa Kidi. So might go check that out and do more research.

Can you also elaborate on why do you choose the baby products that you listed, have you tried other brands and it didn't work so well or was it through recommendations?

Last time i read many review from other mommies who use it in this forum before i decide to buy it and also personal preference.

Maybe you also can join MTB in this forum..you can get many valuable info from their sharing too.

Hi All Mummies,
My EDD is March 2012. It's getting nearer and nearer, but until now i still have not bot much things yet, ie baby cot, stroller, etc.
Some advice me to take playpen, so still considering shall i take cot or playpen and shall i buy brand new stroller or second hand?
Can someone advice me on it?
Thanks

Hi, recently won a maclaren techno xt 2011 in a lucky draw when i purchased the same for my gal. Receiving this sat. Anyone interested to buy? Pls contact me at 9225 9740

Hi, I would prefer you to get a cot instead of a playpen as the baby would be more comfortable sleeping in a cot. In addition, a cot has wheels where you can move it about in the house easily. As for the stroller, I got a Maclaren Techno XLR form Kaki Buki Baby Hyperstore. The retail price there is 20% lower compared to shopping centres.

Hi Evonne,

I agree with you and we are going to buy a baby cot as well. We were browsing at this like store called Casa Kidi and liked some of their cots there but keeping our options open as we would like to take a look at the cots at Motherswork at Great World.

Still undecided on baby strollers!! Too many brands to decide, i guess this weekend we would have to try and test them out.

Hopefully we can decide on what type of cot and brand/model of strollers we are looking into investing.

Hi Adeline,

Would like share my experience on the baby products. The Peg Perego strollers are good and rugged. I had twin boys and i bought a Peg Perego twin stroller and used it for nearly three years without any hassles.

And Milk bottles, I found Avent bottles very practical with its wide neck, wide enough for adding milk powder scoops. And also never had problems with Avent teats.

And on babylotions and babyshampoo, I used SebaMed brand as there were many news and recalls on Johnsons & Johnsons Shampoo / lotion.

After trying out couple of brands like Pampers and Huggies, we settled on cost-effective and efficient 'Drypers'. For pull-up diapers, we used Mamy-poko. Wipes - Fair price was good and cheap.

Louise > Take whatever amount you need and put inside milk bottle, defroze them in the fridge. When it is near feeding time. soak the milk bottle in warm water for 10 min..

Erm... doesnt seem feasible to store those cubes in milk bags. The milk bag a bit small.
Initially I stored the milk in sterilised milk bags. Once baby reaches around 5 months, I started making the milk cubes and storing them in ziploc bags.

Reason being, baby already started putting stuffs into his mouth. Do not think that those stuffs are cleaner than sterilised items.. Thus started using ziploc bags..

Hi Mummies,

I would like to let go my medela freestyle breast pump set, kindly pm me if you are keen. Condition is good and local warranty until oct 2012.

Thank you

Hi! Cot: Definitely Casa Kidi. Has an extensive range of sturdy cots from Italy. Recommend the portable ones. They also have a lot of very cute accessories to go along

My list of reliable and safe brands:

Medela
Nature's Gate (toiletries)
Mothercare
Maclaren
The First Years
Munchkin
Huggies
Pampers
Nuk (pacifier, wet wipes)

I'm a Dr Brown fan.. bb was so bloated when he was using Avent bottle.. but in terms of cleaning, Avent is way better - Dr Brown, way too many things to clean.. but for the sake of bb... what to do...

Went to casa kidi recently, but very bad impression left.
Poor product knowledge and outdated information given to customer, resulting in internal dispute between the staff faint....

Cot colour is fixed and not changeable. Simple cot with nothing outstanding charges $400. Why get from them when easily available elsewhere with that kind of price.

Was aiming for cot that can be converted to toddler bed. After spending some time browsing the whole showroom, another salesman informed us that the cot cannot be converted, no conversion kit sold as they are clearing stock for that cot. And the way he brought the message across is not commendable for service standard. Thumb down for such service.

And yes, step out of the shop -- confused by their internal conflict, poor product knowledge when they are unable to demo the conversion etc.

I personally feel that the most overlooked item for my baby is their shoes. A good shoe can support healthy foot development and also helps promoting balance. Most important protect his delicate feel.

Do check out Shupeas shoes. My boy's using it since he is few months old. One thing to note is that the shoe has special design that is expandable and adjustable and should still fit up to 24 months.

bought at www.tentinytoes.com.sg
