Advice needed from working moms.

Hi to all mommies,

I'm currently 24 weeks pregnancy, and my estimated due date will be on 04 March 2014, this is my first time pregnancy.

I had deferred my studies because of my baby girl. I will be going back to school April 2014. My baby girl will only be 1 month old, and I understand the importance of breast milk for the new-born and worry for engorgement.
I have 2 breaks in between my lessons (normally lessons are from 9am to 4.30pm), so I'm intending to hand express my milk out just to relieve the engorgement. Where as I will express pump out my milk for my new-born, in order for her to feed when I'm in school.

Would it be a good idea? Would appreciate if there are better ideas and advice.

Hi Karen, I would suggest u to buy a dual electric pump instead (save time). Hand express is too time consuming. Try to pump at least 2x when u in school...even a 5min pump helps. If possible try to squeeze in an additional pump if u hv time. :)

hi, u also have to think of a room whereby you can express out ur milk using pump machine (with powerpoint, will be better to use internal battery so that u dun have to worry finding powerpoint) and storing your milk afterthat.

My school does have such rooms but only open for staff not students, i think...

Normally pumping requires how long???? Follow the baby's timing right?

then u have to find a pte room where u can pump for 20mins. Depend what type of machine u using...normally take about 20mins. Pump is not to follow baby timing, u have to pump every 3 hours to keep ur supply and prevent engorement too. Baby need milk every 2 to 3 hours so ensure u have milk for baby.

oh yes, I would also like to ask which brand do you recommend?? I'm looking at AVENT, it seems good.

Mommies, Sorry I'm asking a stupid question....
is it okay if I use one manual breast pump (for school) and electric breast pump(at home) each from different brands?

Hi karen.

Just to share. I'm using Ameda (electric dual pump) and it is good. Medela is good too but i find it too ex.

Pumping in school is ok.. You can even pump in toilet if there is no empty or nursing room. I pump in toilet at work cuz my ofc has no nursing room. The main problem i believe is how you are going to store your milk. You can only keep it in room temp for max 2 hrs, if not you have to put it into the fridge. Especially when your baby is only 1 mth old, you have to pump v regularly as you can't afford to decrease your pump or let your supply drop. I suggest you ask the staff for help to let you store your bm in their pantry/lounge fridge or get help from foodcourt/canteen stalls to store it in their fridge.

Yup, that's my planning.. Thank you for your advice!!!

As hygiene is very important to avoid contamination, better get ur own ice bag than to trust canteen stalls to store in their fridge which usually contain raw meat etc

I'm using Ameda. Cheaper n find it gd too. Better to use dual electric pump...

Yeah, I also heard from my husband brother (he works at my school as a staff, so he heard from his pregnant colleague) there is private room for their staff known as the nursing room. But I do not know whether they open it to students or not.. will try asking the school management. Thank you for your suggestion :)
