Congrats!

I was also hungry and thirsty after c-sec lah. Then because on epi, got side effect of nausea and vomitting, so even when they finally let me eat, it's only milo!

Milo is NOT food! *pissed off*

Those who c-sec will need to have their BP checked every few hrs to make sure everything is ok. I really don't like it when they wake me up to take my BP when I sleeping . So irritating! That's why I always faster faster wanna go home, before i whack the next nurse who wakes me up.

You woke up to feed Joseph huh? So rare to see u posting at 1+am!

Usually if not 1-bedder, they won't let bb stay in the room with u for too long just in case disturb your roommate. I stayed in 2-bed last time when I had J, and they kept taking him away from me. Then whenever ppl came to visit, I had to request for nurse to bring bb in. Sometimes they also won't bring over cos they said my roommate sleeping. I had to ask my visitors to go nursery and see him instead.

Shelled, my bm is very diluted (even after pumping 15min on each side) so I suspect it's all foremilk.

Serious?? The appearance of foremilk and hindmilk is actually quite different – foremilk being kinda like milky-colored water, hindmilk looking more similar to cow's milk.
So I don't suspect you would confuse the two.
Although... have u tried pumping longer than 15 mins? If you have tons of milk, it may take a while before you actually reach the hindmilk.

Nonetheless, I shall do some online research and see if this situation is possible. Will let you know the results of my "study".

mampoko> i was in a too distress state that the nurses made my HB put the laughing gas on me permanently. As the contractions had reached a new peak..
and the jab had yet to take effect...
I was made drowsy..and i could literally feel myself sleeping...
I was just lying there motionless and let the nurses did what they wanted with me..(Basically VE me every other dunno how many min...)
But it was good that i dilated fast from 5-8cm in 30min the moment the jab took effect coz i was in a relaxed state.
I only cringed and squeezed my HB's hands when the contractions come... but with my eyes closed and lying on my left..
that was my only form of relief..

HB's support was very impt coz he held the mask on me with one hand, the other for me to abuse...
And he was half standing and bending coz to reach me.. (he had a bad backache when we reached the ward after delivery.. )

I felt the pushing part the most shiok..wheneever the contractions come and we push together, thats a pain relief..
the focus was on the pushing and not the contractions...

Made to push thrice with each contractions...
My girl was real big...and hence i had a pretty long episiotomy..Gynae says else i'll tear badly...

stiches are still hurting now..cant sit too long..best to lie down....

Recovery>
I discharged on 10th and the moment we reached home, bb was crying nonstop for 4 hours such that she was losing her voice..
i got so upset and heartache seeing her cry that i broke down too..
we called the hosp and was asked to send her back to see whats wrong...

Turn out she was in hunger.. Though i was BF her since day 1, but she wasnt sucking that well on 1st nite.. and 2nd day morning..
so she didnt actually got much... but 2nd day itself i fed her many times..and it was all colostrum..
She had pinkish urine twice coz lack of fluid intake...

So by the time we went home, milk still yet to come in.. (Day 3)
And hence even though she was sucking for 30min every one hour, she still didnt get the amt of fluid she needed..
ANd hence, when she was fed FM at the hosp when we went back, she stopped crying..
So it was purely hunger that made her cried soo miserably...

I was glad that i relented.. coz if i insisted on not giving her FM, she'll be dehydrated..
Nurses at Mt A were very very supportive and kind..
Seeing that both mummy and baby were crying, they comforted me and offered us 4 bottles of milk to go home and standby..together with 4 disposable NUK teats..

When i came back.. i alt between BM and FM when she cant seem to be satisfied even after sucking for 30min...

So just yest, we bought a can of milk to supplement..

And since yest, my milk has come in...but she somehow still not satisfied...
and i've been badly engorged since last nite..
I've managed to pump out about 70ml yest frm 3-4 different pumpings...
and right now, i'm awake pumping.... thats why i'm here...

Even after pumping, the engorgement still there...
i had to apply hot towel, massage and pump on one side...then repeat on the other side...
and only like 10ml of milk... that is per pump..., today is day 5....

But its good that milk is coming in....but i pray my engorgement will go down.. but i dunno how it will happen...unless i pump every 2 hours??
baby is not happy sucking.. not sure she too used to teats already or what...
or she cant suck it out..but so much milk and cannot come out.... why ah?? >.<"

she'll suck and then push away.. i hope this is temporary....

i worried she too used to FM bottle..coz have given her 3 last nite..as my breasts too sore and peeling and engorged..
and she just dun wan to latch on...she'll suck and push out screaming..just let her scream..
i wanna her to help me relief engorge...but if she dun wanna suck..then how?

Think my PD's charges a bit high!! Coz PD itself is $310.70....

But my gynae's fee is much lower at $1086.05, inclusive of Attendanace & Operation fees..

Total Bill: $4010..87
Medisave Claim: About $2373.66
Total Cash Payable: $1637.21 ( but should be lesser coz HB forgot to add my name as 2nd claimant for Medisave)

This is just the interim bill..they'll send the finalised bill over in 2 weeks time.

Am quite pleased that single bedded is roughly about $4k only...

i reply ur post later. my joseph boy just finish feed, now poo and i gotta pump my right boob cos engorged after he didnt wake up his usual 2-hourly. he just woke up 3.5 hr from last feed n whack my left side .

Jed didn't latch tt long lah.. I count in the time when he needed change of diapers, burp etc so total time taken to finish tt feed was 2.5hrs. This boy will not continue his feed once he poo. He will cry & cry till u change him den settle down to feed again.

Try e method I posted earlier, filled him up w bottle 1st den latch. This is wat I did to my gal. She was bottle-fed in TMC when she was there for phototherapy so come back dun wan latch.

I also add Thick & Easy Thickener to her bottle EBM. This make e flow much slower & reduce chances of reflux. After awhile, she just switch back to total latching.

That's my experience with e medela cooler bag when I was using PIS. Not sure if they had improved on it.

And there was actually reports from Center of Environment Health that said Medela Cooler bag contains lead which is harmful to baby so I totally stopped using. It was published in The New York Times.

Hey Bernice, when next week are you going in to be induced? My OB has also recommended inducing Marc in view of his *a-hem* phenomenal growth. We're to see her again on Tuesday, scan again, and decide from there. See what happens when you tell your unborn son to grow big and strong? *shakes head* Oh well. He's been rather frisky these few days though. Does this funny dance inside that makes my belly wobble from side to side. Very cute.

Btw, did anyone have aching finger joints during pregnancy? I wake up every morning nowadays with aching stiff fingers. The ache kind of goes away after working the joints a bit. I'm hoping it's just fluid retention. I have the occasional carpal tunnel kind of numbness and tingling, but this joint thing is more bothersome.

My duty ends at 4-5am lah. Hubs sleep from 12-4am, then I sleep from 4-8am. Give and take 1 hr difference lor. Depending on feed time. But last nite both boys were asleep by 11pm! And they both sleep together in their room!!

I woke K up for feed at 12.30am, then he went back to sleep, so hubs and i went to sleep together until 4am then K woke for milk again. SO HAPPY!!!

Finally everyone can sleep at the same time lor! Then 5.30am K went back sleep again, then I go join hubs and sleep again!! Waaaaaah!! I hope every night will be like that from now on!

We're only celebrating the full mth today lah. Actually full mth is 17th Sept?

how many hourly do u pump?cos not possible to get only foremilk and not hindmilk. some mothers got oversupply so they tend to have a large quanitity of foremilk and needs to pump longer to get the hindmilk. for ur case, why dun u either try to pump longer (instead of 15 mins, do it 25 mins) or shorten ur pumping interval (instead of 4 hourly, do it 3 hourly)to get the thicker hindmilk. u try and see how?

Shelled and mama to 6Js

I pump every 3-4 hours. At times, I latch my boy on first for about 30 mins (15 on each side) and then pump for another 30 mins, and I still get only foremilk. Is it possible that diet and the kind of beverage that we drink will affect the amt of hindmilk one has? I definitely has no oversupply, infact, it's under. My 30 mins pumping gives me max 85ml now. It's only when I handsqueezed then I see the hindmilk on my nipple and it's just pathetic droplets on the nipple. I don't know if this is the reason why my boy is never full after the latching on. He will still drink the same amt of FM as though he has not latched on. I shall try longer pumping session.

At times, I really feel like giving up and just feed FM.

My birth story:
12pm - went for a bath to get ready to go see gynae at tmc for chkup and induction. got bloody show n soon mild contractions kicked in at 15mins interval as per my last post.

1.30pm - hubby came hm, we had lunch n headed to clinic. nurse did ctg for me while waiting for gynae to come bk fm lunch. by then contractions were getting closer n stronger.

2.30pm - gynae came n did VE. cervix was already 5cm dilated. gynae asked if i wanted epi, if not will be too late to ask for it. i said yes coz pain was getting unbearable already.

3.30pm - epi already administered, but still having very painful contractions n backache. was literally crying n mourning in pain wif laughing gas on. begged anesthetist to make the pain go away.

4.30pm - gynae came n broke waterbag n bb was delivered after almost 10 pushes! nearly died out of breath from all the pushing.

Don't know if this will help, but try it:
Latch bb on 1 breast all the way instead of 15 mins each side. This will at least ensure bb reaches the hindmilk of 1 breast.

I know it's hard, and you're tired, but let's just exhaust all possibilities before you really turn to FM, ok? *hugs*

J did that a lot when he was a NB too. Don't worry. Usually it's caused by:
- reflux (natural reflex, can't be helped)
- gas. burping bb well after feed will help.
- overfeeding. Try to feel bb's tummy periodically during a feed. If it's hard and big and round, best to stop them once their sucking turns slow and less enthusiastic. Some bbs are just tam jiak, and will jiak until puke. Then after puke, jiak some more. J was EXACTLY like that.

He stopped it after I always scold him when he puke and i refuse to give him more BM. Then when he started solids, he started to overeat and merlion again. Really is tam jiak king!

Shelled, shall let him latch on one n pump the other 1 and switch sides during next feed. I guess I was too anxious for him to stimulate both sides so that I will have more milk for the other baby. Thanks for the encouragement.

Pumping sessions
How long should one pumping sessions last ? Should i stay on one side for a period of time or switch side every 5 mins(this is taken from website). Just now pump after feeding. 20mins per side but switch breast every 5mins. Only got 30ml

Meaning bb only take so little milk per feeding ???

congratulations to all mummies who had popped.. went for my gynae appt this morning, will be having an elective c-sec on 14 sep at 2pm. Gynae actually says if wan it this afternoon also can! haha but my cot not even set up yet lo

getting abit nervous nw altot this is my #2.. haha went carrfour after gyane visit to finish buying up all the bb stuff.. was standing in front of the FM counter for awhile pondering if i shld get a can to stand by.. in e end.. i decided not to.. hahaha.. its so exp!

Glad you made the right decision to send your little one for checkup and detected the dehydration. Maybe you wanna get a lactation specialist to help you lacthing on better? Pumping is very stressful if you haven't established your supply, cos if you can only pump out very little, you would always thought baby doesn't have enough when you latch one, once your lost the confident, everything turns negative, it's in your mind.

My baby just turned 3 weeks yesterday. Started from week 2, she already drinks 110-120ml!!!

I latch on most of the time, and give EBM once or twice a day.

My questions, please help!

One thing I am curious is how much should we bottle feed EBM to our baby, since we don't know how much they drink while latching on? Is it to give whatever we can express, or give a fixed amount everytime, and when to increase the amount? Experienced "pumping mummies", can you please share?

And for the experienced "latch on mummies", if baby only takes 1 breast, do you always express the other side? If no engorgement and such, and not keen to increase supply by pumping, can I don't pump the other side, just wait till next feeding and offer her this side?

And what exactly does a let-down mean? Do you mean anything? My supply is kinda good, but I still can't feel what's a letd-down leh. Can anyone describe?
