(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Hi K's mom, I mean writing out capital letters. I've always assumed that he can do it and seldom focus on it, and it's only while making a storybook with him that I noticed he's very weak in it. As some of u know, I've been disappointed by his school for couple of months. That shows how "good" his english teachers are ... vs how much he's really learning from the Chinese teacher.

For the National Museum, I had second doubts abt going to the Mozart Exhibit. There's the toddler museum on it last weekend but I choose not to go. We spent Labour Day there on some free activities and some paid. The paid activity turned out to be not that suitable; all the mothers felt the same way. It's btw meant for 3 to 8 but clearly it's more suitable for school-going kids as it requires a lot of writing! Perhaps the Mozart is better but I've seen the promo during CNY and B's clearly not interested. I'm really wary now when they said it's meant for 6 - 12 yr old but todds, 4 or 5 yr olds is also welcome, after the paid activity experience. But the young cinema portion is rather good ... they actually show diff short films on diff dates.

Hi Serena, Can be english or chinese .. cos i noticed that he likes to see those single box cartoons in the ST and also likes to look at the comics section, so thot of trying out comics on him. So what is this chinese set that got Bel hook on .. perhaps i can try it too.

Hi Pris, so comics is the way to lure kids to read? Not that JA don't read but he only want us to read to him, he doesn't read on his own. So I want him to hv the habit of reading on his own.

Gin, Kai can read some books on his own, those that he is very interested. He has been reading a couple of Han Christian Andersen books, Steps into reading (Thomas & friends), Fiction books from DK as well. He is 4plus going 5.

Basically, we have been on lots of fieldtrips, the last one we covered was fish and we visited the underwater world, go marketing to buy fish, he looked at the skeleton of fish and we do alot of reading together about fish. Also when we were in Vancouver, we went to a salmon conservatory where they hatch and bled salmon till a certain before release back to the steam, Kai went to a salmon send off and it sparkle his interest about Fiction books. We do take some notes and here I have to help him along as filing.

Recently, we are looking into birds so the two of us have been reading about birds. Facts about birds, how birds are classified, the different feathers on birds. He is waiting to make another bird house when we go over to Sydney, we have done that in Vancouver and we brought him birdwatching so hopefully we have the chance to do it in Sydney too. We have been watching documentary about penguin, migrating birds etc.

Serena & Sherlyn, find any good comics besides Asterix and Tin Tin, let me know. What is the chinese comics?

I know NYPS is making the children subscribe to nurture craft discoverybox comes in a book with both story and comics. And also there is storybox which comes in the same format for younger children. I am thinking of dropping by 2nd hand bookstore to see whether they have some good comics to try on Kai to see why he likes them. Personally I loves Peanuts, newspaper sections for comic, and I read lots of comic even now when I am stressed haahaa.

Hi Sher!

I can totally understand why you're so keen to get JA to read on his own... coz my single motivation since B was 3.5 was to teach him to read on his own so that he wouldn't come bothering me! Still we are a long way from that. Sense my frustration there? But he's always been able to to sit down to flip through a book on his own since 3. He'll move through a stack within minutes and then pick out a few titles and demands to be read to.

Recently his teacher did a reading assessment with him. We discovered he's actually very capable of reading Bob books on his own.
Hmmm... maybe JA might like them. Look for them in the library and check if he likes them. They kind of resemble comic books with a drawn picture and one sentence. better in fact since that one sentence isn't in the tiniest of prints!
Here's an example. Get him to look at it and see if he likes it:

Got this a few days ago but only remembered yesterday ... check it out. It happens perhaps once a yr ...

Thanks K's mom. The books look great. I think i'll try to see if they can be found in our library. Muak. hehe, how u know i wish he could read on his own so that he dun come bothering me. ;-)

Thanks Serena. The storyline of the comic is close to heart (not sure if i hv used this phrase correctly). Friends, family life, school life. Bet it rings a bell in the kids. Will go check it out this saturday.

A write up in Simply Her May 08 gives info on planning factory tour. Yakult is one of them and is already planned. They also mentioned Gardenia, Thong Siek (fishball) factory, Khong Guan Cookie tour, Thow Kwang Pottery and Seah's spices Food industries (dun think this suit our kids).

Anyone interested for a biscuit factory tour? Its in Jln Boon Lay .. yay the west. ;-)

Hi Sherlyn,
When is the biscuit factory tour ?
happy.gif

Sherlyn, not too sure whether they still make biscuits here, heard that those operations are in M'sia and China now. You check it out and let us know. If the date is before we relocate, we might go with all of you.

Hi Apricot, I hv not decided on that yet. I will be taking Pris's advice to call them up and check if we really going to see biscuit making in process. Will update here.

Hi Pris, ok, will call them up. Update here after that.

Hi all,

Called up KHong Guan. They only allow kids of age 7 and above to visit the factory .. so we just hv to wait a few more years.

Hi Pris, I just suppose there is, i din ask ... cos if they allow factory visit, i assume they still hv operation.

Sherlyn, I know that they still do some packing here but not too whether the biscuits making is still here.

To all

Happy Mothers' Day.

Oh Pris, y din i think of that. Anyway, i guess its not so impt now since we can only wait till the kids turn 7 before we can visit the factory.

btw, Pris, you mention abt firefly farm. May I hv the address and are we suppose to visit the farm at night? I thot of going too.

Sher, it is at Lim Chu Kang Lane 2, I did not have the exact location. Learn about it at Bollywood Veggies Farm. The farm is know as Fireflies Health Farm. Not too sure whether it is a veggies farm or it really has fireflies. So you might want to check it out.

Hi Pris,

Thanks for the info .. hv chked it out. Its a veggies farm .. and thks for the info on fireflies at JB. For that in JB, will hv to wait. ;-)

cheers
sherlyn

Hi,

I'm looking at organizing a Hydroponic Farm tour, http://www.ohfarms.com.sg/. This tour is reasonably suitable for 3-5 year old.

The reason is bcos B's school is organizing it on his last school-day and it costs quite a lot if he joins him then, so I intend to do one for him (and have my family enjoy this too).

Details
- location is near Khatib MRT
- $2.50 pax (above 3 year old) and includes 2 pack of veg.
- tour would be on a Sat morning (that's the only weekend timing they have). I'm looking at potentially a June date, subject to their availability.
- needs min of 20 paying person to have a guided tour.
- approx 1 hr to 1.5 hrs.

Do pm on the number of paying person so that I get an idea if I've got the minimum to proceed.

Hi chloe .. interested but the fee ..... furthermore it is not parent children class (cos this mummy wants to join too haha) .. will ask dh abt it. Hmm if i send both, it will be $500!
sad.gif

ky, i m interested, but will hv to ask my dh if he wants to join. Looks like a good place to visit, i m even interested in the herb and spice tour!

I suppose we are meeting at the farm direct? What timing would you be looking at? Would like to ask if you mind it being later then 9am so it gives me some time to travel there. But no obligation on the timing.

thks

Hi Sherlyn

It's be a tour that's suitable for children, and so it'll probably be the Hydroponic tour. I'm looking at 9.30am to around 11. Yes, meeting at farm.

Hi Chloe, I believe NAFA's a good institution but travelling there and hefty fees are big obstacles for me. You might wanna consider Act3 holiday programs though I've hear both positive and negative responses to it.

.ky.

Hi Ky, I'm keen in the Hydroponic Farm tour. However I can only make it if falls on 28th June. If not possible on the date, then no worries you gals go ahead.

Hi Sherlyn,
Agree, the fees are quite steep. But it's the best time now, once they start P1, may not have time for such activities

Mother & child sessions? We always do it at home!

Hi KY,
I've heard very good review on NAFA (apparently the next intake is 2010!), so decided to try this out.

Act 3 holi programmes are just as exp :p

Will not be joining anymore outing as we have quite a bit of gathering lined up and also lots of packing to be done before we leave. Hope all of you have fun.

Hi Chloe,

Ya hor, when they start real proper schooling, they may not hv such time, but i m really hoping for a mother and child session. You always do it at home? how abt blogging it so that i can pick up some tips and do it at home too ;-)

Thanks for the info. Think i give it a miss. Will wait for your tips hehehe.

Hi KY,

Ya I m definitely fine with the hydro tour. We will have 4 pax here, 2A2C.

Thanks for organising.

cheers
sherlyn

Hi Sherlyn,

Hmmm....with kids, work & housework to juggle, not much time left to blog :p

You certainly have more hobbies than I do. For a start, involve your kids in the baking/beading sessions. I'm sure they will love it!

Hi Chloe,

ya, more hobbies so no time for kids, selfish mum hor. Anyway did involved kids in baking, but they are not so keen .. they only like to mess up and do not follow instructions .. haha if let them help, then the bakes wun come out.

cheers
sherlyn

Hi chloe, my kids are in nafa arts and yep, we like the curriculum. Have you put c on waiting list? Thereafter, registration for the classes is first come first served.

Hi Sherlyn, I'm transferring kids to plaza sp for the jmc so won't see you to say 'hi n bye' at clementi branch from next term. How's JA doing?

Hi Jan,

Nafa has stopped taking in names to the mailing list for Intake 2009, cos they have 1,500 applicants waiting to enroll while their projected annual intake is only 600. It is THAT good?

Anyway, I don't think I will send C for the weekly classes. The holiday program is good enough for now, I'm sure she'll enjoy making friends & crafts
happy.gif

Hi Sherlyn,

Ha ha, mess is part of the fun really. Gee, I think life as a child not be as fun if they have to faithfully obey all our instructions.

Wow, looks like we are going to miss all the holiday programme. Will see some of you tomorrow at 11am and also those going for Yakult trip on 30 May.

Hi Pris,

I nearly forgot the meetup tomorrow until I saw ur post. Was pretty upset recently and completely forgot about the gathering.. Gosh... thanks ya. Looking forward to see you.

hi hi ... just wanna share on the tennis trial we went this morning. if your kid is interested in tennis, good to go for a trial. B enjoyed himself tremendously this morning, but we'll continue to play with him on a casual basis.

Hi Sherlyn
Try to start with simple activities; good to instill discipline in the kids and extend from there.

.ky.

Hi Sherlyn,

So sorry that I was not able to reply you immediately. I did not manage to access after my last post.

You looked great and fresh today. And also slimmer..

To Mommies I've met today, I've enjoyed catching up with all of you today.

Mommies, any idea which free software to do a photo collage eg. 16photos in a a4 size?

Hi Jan,

Thanks for asking. JA is still meddling alot with the buttons while the teacher speaks, so i hope it will pass. I am finding the pace abit slow thou, but teacher has a point, knowing how to play and knowing how to play well is different so i hope JA can practice more on the JMC pieces then just meddling with the inbuilt keyboard pieces at home.

Next term .. you must be looking forward to it .. can go shopping before or after class ;-)

Saw that u send your kids to NAFA kindergarten .. u stay in the west and the school is in the east .. u travel so much daily? They must hv done alot of art related projects .. so fun.

Hi Pris, don't mention. It didn't really take up much of my time since not alot of people involved.

Hi Moo, no problem abt not replying. We are kind of worried cos all three of us did not have your contacts, but it proved no problem at all. Thanks for making your way down to the west. Great and fresh today cos i hv been sleeping well lately without baking (kids and me are sick) and not beading (for a long long time). Slimmer? Thank you. Indeed a kg lighter but it is largely the long top that gives the effect. I am going to buy more of these tops!

Hi all, I enjoyed myself very much today too. Sorry for not queuing first after i reached. My kids also keep telling me they enjoyed the gathering. The kids must have really enjoyed themselves. I especially like the innocent look on Zavier's face when he expressed his wish of staying instead of heading home.

Let's have another soon since the school holiday is coming. :)
