(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Hi Lena!

Yeah! You like Bryan's school too? I'm sad that I didn't go to one when I was his age. But I still enjoy going to school with him right now. It's full of surprises for the little ones everyday. Even Kristin is enjoying her brief moments in the school everyday at drop-off and pick-up. Hopefully, that will prepare her for the two's class next year.
happy.gif

Yeah... I'm pretty impressed that the teachers take kids out on excursions. The Five's went on an excursion recently. They went to a post office and mailed their own letter (addressed to themselves). Wasn't that fun?

Kids are ok now... sigh... but me sick. Have been resisting to see the doc until today. She gave me a dose of antibiotics, finally. Docs here don't usually prescribe antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.

My hb isn't away on long periods, but away often. e.g. once/twice every week. So there'll be always time when he sees the kids only two days later. When he's gone for more than 3 days at one stretch, the kids will go crazy missing the daddy... They start to do silly things to iritate you lah...Is Mel like that too?

Oh... the normal FM is too greasy for her stomach right now. Try diluting. e.g. 1 scoop makes 60ml. Try half scoop FM to 60ml. Mix rice water with FM is also very good. But dilute FM. I know it's painful to see your child lose weight. Kristin is also not a big baby.

Hi Moms!

Bryan likes sand alot... sand at the playground, sand by a construction site - not that he gets to play there... but even as we walk pass it, he'll seize every opportunity to walk on sand.

So he comes home with lots of sand... from the moment I take off his shoes... funny thing is he's got tonnes of sand trapped in his sneakers to the time I take off his pants - always check his back pockets which are often filled with sand. Feel like sealing up his backpockets.

I tried making little stops on our way home and knocking out sand off his sneakers whenever I have the chance. e.g. at the busstop, at the courtyard to our apartment etc.

But we never fail to bring sand back... and then in the end, I have to kneel down with a dustpan and sweep... otherwise my home will be a beach house.

Thank goodness that Frankfurt hasn't got a beach... but help!!! How to discourage him from his obsession with sand?

Maybe I should think about getting a small handy vacuum cleaner, the wet/dry type.

Hi kristins_mom,
Glad to hear that Kristin is fine now. Probably, it's just one of those viral infections.

How ab changing Bryan into a clean set of clothes before leaving the school premise? Brandon's school doesn't have a sandpit, so no problem with sand for me.

Lena,
How did Mel get contact with the Salmonella bacteria? My french pd favourite advice is cooking carrot with porridge. Even if Mel can't take much, let her have the rice water.

Brandon is doing fine in school now. Fewer complaints on "bullying". I think the teachers arrange for the girls to walk with him at the playground. He was pretty shy when he first told me about them walking together and holding hands. Oh boy, and I thought he was too young to be aware of gender differences. Brandon has a memory book. Every week, the teachers will jot down what happened in school. We, parents, have to do likewise too. So, now I have "homework" every week, gotta think abt what to put in.

Hi mommies,

My hubby was commenting on the no. of enrichment classes the kids nowadays are attending. He feels that most parents share the same mentality, i.e. if you don't send the kids for the classes, they will "lose out". I'm just wondering how does a kid handle daily classes (for those attending half day classes) and 2 (or more) enrichment classes per week? Mommies, how does your kid manage such hectic schedule? I think we have a very laidback lifestyle for the last few years.

Lena/kristins_mom,
From a teacher's point of view, will attending such preschool enrichment classes enhance learning? Does it mean that kids not attending enrichment classes are at a losing end?

Have a break!

Yesterday I was having some work done. At the car dealer. A blonde woman came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten. They all looked at each other, and the Mechanic asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?" She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine. I lost it and need a new one. It had always been there."

The mechanic gave the woman a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710.

He then took her over to another car which had the hood up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?" She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there."

Lena,
A gp once told me to drink coke if stomach discomfort or diarrhea. Live by this 'rule' since young. Somehow it seems to work (of course not the serious kind la). Yeah, it's not a proper meal and may be too sweet for Mel too. Thot you may want to give her a little for the stomach to 'open up'. Just a suggestion.

It's a matter of time Mel starts her milk intake. Dont worry. You are petite, so you can't expect her to be big too. Favourite remark from my pd.

Hey Serenade,
710 is a good one! Going to share it around. Btw, do you still need to wear sunglasses? Hope your eyes are much better.

Never watch Barbie movies before. Saw my niece playing kissing games with the dolls when she was abt 4/5yrs old. Shock of my life.

Kristin's_mom,
Can't help you in the sand obsession...but can help you to clean up. Try using powder. Was told that sand helps to transmit HFMD virus. I presume HFMD is not common in Frankfurt. Is it?

Serenade and all mummies, I have mine to share..

A woman was walking down the street when she was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked her for a couple of dollars for dinner.

The woman took out her bill fold, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some wine with it instead of dinner?"

"No," I had to stop drinking years ago, the homeless woman replied.

"Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?" the woman asked "No I don't waste time shopping," the homeless woman said.
"I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?" the woman asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless woman. "I haven't had my hair done in 20 years!"

"Well," said the woman, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out for dinner with my hubby and myself tonight."

The homeless woman was astounded. "Won't your hubby be furious with you for doing that?
I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."

The woman replied, "That's okay. It's important for him to see what a woman looks like after
she has given up shopping, hair appointments, and wine."

Serenade
Thot ur username is unique. Does your hub serenade u with love songs? Or do u like to sing? Or is it a French inspired thing?
My poor mel is on carrot, potato and porridge diet every day, and anything to do with milk is out. Good thing that she;s not complaining and eating what i give her, in fact, she doesn;t like milk, it;s me who's missing the milk. she went on a milk strike many many months back. since then i spoon feed her milk with cereal puffs, very hard on me, but i am not letting her off so easily. i feed her twice a day and she takes UHT milk when she feels like it.
Abt enrichment, i think many parents are on the enrichment bandwagon cos' they feel insecure when their kids are just playing with toys or watching TV when other kids are somewhere doing something 'enriching'. If u ask me, i would prefer mel to be at the beach or at the park duuring weekends than being cooped up in a small air-conditioned room reading flashcards hee hee yah yah very negative perception of 'enrichment'. Yes, enrichment for ur kids if money is no object and the kids look forward to the class every week. But if the kid is happier getting into sand or catching spiders with mommy n daddy, then those experiences are enriching for him already. it is a different case however if the kid shows a special talent or strong interest in a particular area, and not nuturing him in that area will be shortchanging him. Generally i am more for life skills/self help stuff like swimming or martial arts or skills learning like playing d piano. Many popular progs like Kumon, MPMmath, shichida that require long term commitment to see results are not for us, we hv no budget for that sort of thing. As long as mel is happy and loved, and enjoys simple things a child enjoys, her childhood is enriched ;)

K's mom
mel, like bryan is also sand crazy and when she plays, she throws away the scoops and spades and digs both hand into them, very unlady-like haha she is also obsessed with picking up leaves, she has to find the tiniest one, ask to wash it and bring it home after a visit to the park.
how abt getting a pair of shoes that's easy to maintain, easy to wash and dry type, Crocs?
or put his shoes in a bag before entering the house?

Sarah
thanks for Coke idea
happy.gif

Abt kinderland, how big is hannah's class? Student-teacher ratio? Is it a 3-hr prog? Do they serve healthy snacks?

Mel is finally going out tomorrow after being cooped up for a week. we are heading to Kinokuniya for her books, Popular has discontinued curious george so sad. we recently chanced upon Richard Scarry's books, they are so funny, mel literally roars with laughter at her fave pages. check them out, yep, richard scarry's also avail at kino.

serenade
salmonella is present in contaminated/undercooked meat, poulty, eggs, hidden in salad dressing, also hides in dirty utensils or hands. We couldn't trace the cause ... closest is dirty hands and egg cracking, yes, i let her crack an egg, that potent???

hi serenade!

enrichment programme... share the same view with lena.

besides, i don't think i wanna drag myself to send the children for enrichment classes on weekends.

i think young children love to learn from their parents and to be with them... and if you are doing so much with them, e.g. craft work, letting them count the grapes as you wash them
happy.gif
or a trip to the supermarket to identify fruits or classify food classes, what's there to worry about? Surely your children will learn maths and science! besides, you read to them. that's better than any literacy programme available. sometimes it's those parents who work full-time and feel that they don't have time to teach their children and they just don't wanna lose out just in case, so enrichment class after enrichment class.

but when the time comes for Bryan to learn swimming, i'll send him for swim class. music - let him beg me to send him...
happy.gif
like german, i'm letting him beg me to teach him. no motivation is greater than "i want to learn it myself!".

i think you're not the sort who sends kids to enrichment programme either. if i were Brandon or Cheryl, i'd find it so much more fun to be around the parents i adore than be at an enrichment class.
happy.gif

hi lena!

so mel likes sand too!
happy.gif
let's meet at the beach for the next outing!

yap... shoes are always the culprit. i find some can trap incredulous amount of sand in them.

a set of clean clothes to change is too tedious coz Kristin tags along at pick up. she'll be roaming in the school if left alone.

i'll go get better shoes...

have you tried flavoured milk with mel? nap time is a special treat for Bryan. strawberry flavoured and cold (if he's not sick) milk. He loves it and knows it's nap time straight after.

Hi,

Like to seek advise from Wild Wild Wet goers. What is the acceptable attire inside ? Must I be in swimsuit ? Can I just be in T-shirts and shorts ? Or T-shirts with a swimsuit beneath it?

Thanks for the advise.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your concern ;) My eyes are improving everyday. However, the vision in my right eye is still fluctuating. On some days, I have near perfect vision. But on certain days, the vision is still a bit blur. Nevertheless, I can see perfectly well with both eyes. Hopefully, it will stabilize soon.

Lena & Kristins_mom,
Thanks for sharing your views and encouragement on the enrichment programmes. Recently, the thought of going back to Sg is unsettling me. I just hope that I won't be pressurize into sending my kids to those enrichment programmes. Lena, like you, we don't have budget for those expensive long term programmes either. Rather, I would prefer to spend money on books and stuff that encourage active learning. You know what, catching spiders is one idea I have since Brandon was a baby. That's the kind of childhood I hope he will get to enjoy
happy.gif
Talking about beaches, maybe we should bring our kids to the beach together one day. Both my kids are nuts abt the sand and water too.

Hi Lena,
Cracking egg is unlikely to be the culprit unless Mel tried tasting the egg after cracking it? Brandon does that. I was wondering if Mel got it from eating raw fish. We love raw fish from those porridge stalls. However, I'm not sure if I'm ready to let Brandon try it. No very comfortable with the hygiene standard in Sg.

Serenade is the first periodic album that I played to Brandon when he was still a baby. Both of us love the music in that album. Singing, er, think I sing so horribly that you won't want to be around when I do it.
happy.gif

Hi Kristins_mom,
Brandon used to be very comfortable with strangers too. He was so comfortable and confident of himself that he got himself lost in Paris a few months ago. We were in an open shopping area and he went off to look for his father without telling me at all. Ever since the incident, I having been drumming him with horrible stories of how little kids were kidnapped by strangers and made to become beggars. Nowadays, he's more wary abt his surroundings and strangers.

Mommies!
I bought Richard Scarry;s Funniest Storybook Ever, we laugh like crazy, simply adore it, it has plenty of short stories, fantastic illustrations for great discussions and of course the funniest storyline. hee hee i am so pleased with this book, i declare it the besy buy of the year! heeeeez Kinokuniya $18.90. Serenade & K's mom, maybe better price at amazon or your local stores.

and sure we can go to the beach one day. but for now, all of us here are hanging out at shopping malls. choking choking. lucky u!

Hi Mommies,
Today I went to IMM/DAISO and gosh, the store is packed with lotsa of Xmas deco for us to buy. I bot one Xmas hat for aston and he loves it. DAISO is also opening in Plaza Sg and VivoCity at Harbourfront!!! SO means next time I need not travel all the way to Jurong.

hi hi everyone, been a busy week for me ... hopefully next week is not as bad.

Worry Mum, did u go to the MPH sale? I went to borders today (after ages of "not being to Orchard Rd"). felt giddy with screaming babies and kids all over the bookstore.

I hardly meetup with my friend but she's very helpful in sharing her knowledge to anyone who needs ...

kristin's mom, Ben's just got a letter posted back from his school too. They wrote a letter to themselves when they did a theme on occupation. They did not post in the post office themselves though.

Serenade

On enrichment programme, like Lena, I don't support going to academic ones, but if it's a skill, I might. And even on that, I've to consider whether the interest is genuine and whether we can afford it. When I asked Ben to choose what he wants to learn (out of all the ballgames that he like), it's golf ... I don't personally appreciate that, so I'll probably try to influence him to somethings else *hahaha*

Sarah
Ben goes to a home-based playgroup org by some mummies. The mummies take turns to be lead a session and this week is mine. We did a theme on birds today and the kids were all eagerly peeling and slicing the eggs to make sandwiches ...

Apricot
Daiso is ALREADY opened in Plaza Singapura. I was there on Thur but no time to go n take a look

Sherlyn,
I'd suggest wearing T-shirt with a swimsuit beneath it. Imagine how u'd look when wet. I'd usually wear T-shirt if I don't wanna get burned ..

btw, anyone knows how long does Amazon takes to ship? I've just placed an order for a fren who's in US now ... hopefully it's reach within 10 days.

.ky.

Hi ky!

Is it the homebased playgroup that did the post office theme? Or is Ben also attending a preschool? Coz the other time you showed us the scholastic book order list from a school. So I thought he attends one.

Wasn't it exciting for him to receive a letter?
happy.gif

Bryan's theme for this week is forrest animals. THere will be lots of outside walk, but brrrh... it's turning cold! I think they'll at most see squirrels scurrying around in the American settlement.

Hi Lena!

I will look out for that book on amazon.

Am also thinking of getting Bryan a headphone and some audio books. We were at IKEA the other day and Bryan was completely captivated by a German story... though he hardly understands German. He sat at the children's corner with the headphone and was all smiles while my husband and I were having lunch.

Any good audio books to recommend?

Hi Serenade!

I can only remind Bryan on Franklin being lost in the woods one day. So I always nag at him to stay close lest "bad" people grab him away.

There was once we were in a park and a mom was worried sick coz she couldn't find her 3 year-old son and it was already getting dark. So my husband and I quickly helped to go round and look but no luck... and shortly we left. And then we told Bryan how sad the mommy was and the boy could be very cold and hungry and scared.

Met Bryan's teacher at a school fair yesterday. Apparently, Bryan's "at war" with another boy in his class. But teacher said there's nothing to worry about. They squabble and argue but they still like to play with each other. And their personalities are so alike, that's why they verbally fight most of the time. They will both be so unhappy if either was made a leader while they are fine with anyone else being a leader.

I think these days Bryan likes to play the contradict-game. He'll say, Mommy, you'll say no and I'll say yes, ok? For no reason at all... just for fun of arguing... I would fall for his trick if I said no too quickly. So sometimes, I'll play another game by following/repeating whatever he says.

It has been a long busy weekend... I really need to rest a while... and my parents are back from NY... more cooking and laundry...

Gtg!

Hi ky,

Thanks for the advice. At least I can cover up my big fat body with a big t-shirt. Cant sacrifice giving my kids the fun even though I have a bad shape, right? :)

Thanks again.

cheers
sherlyn

Hi Lena,
I chanced upon Richard Scarry's VCD, Best counting and Best Sing along. Good quality and they cost me only $1.90 each. I started to watch them just now and I have fallen "in love" with the stories. So I will start hunt the books and VCDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kristin's mom

yes. Ben's in a school (actually a half-day childcare). that's the one that did the postman theme ... this week's theme is halloween and the classroom is done up with orangy-blacky stuff .... anyone celebrating halloween? I'm quite unsure what's the meaning behind the festival though.

thx for the info on Amazon, package is shipped out, so now keeping fingers crossed that they'll land safely in my fren's hotel ...

For those with 2 kids or more, what do u say when the older one plays with the younger's toys and refuse to let the younger child play with his? Ben likes to play with the baby brother's toys (they are baby toys) but when Keith touches his stuff, he'll take it out of his hands ... I'm telling him that it's selfish to do so, that they are baby's toys so he shouldn't be hoarding them but I'm thinking if I should segregate whose toy it belongs to (am foreseeing that eventually I've to get 2 of a toy if a toy only belongs to ONE boy) ... shall i just say that the toys are meant for them and they should just share/take turn?

.ky.

hi apricot
where did u get the VCDs? only $1.90??? authentic?
pl go get the books, i promise u will love them to bits haha

hi K's mom
we don't use audio books, but it's a gd idea to explore. mel loves reading to herself lah... haha
hey, i went to Ikea too, bought the abacus toy set, pretty cool, thought it would be useful for addition n subtraction, i must go dig out an old book i have on abacus and see how i can adapt to suit mel. we also got a $3 clock (real clock), a simple black n white one, nothing fanciful, good for teaching time.

Anyone else bought anything interesting?

oh, i have been wanting to buy bags, trendy funky unique types. any good website to share, local ones?

ky,
are you attending scrapbooking lessons? can be an expensive hobby in the long run...i always think that halloween is an american's thingy...a marketing gimmick to get money out of your pockets...hahaha

lena,
are you crazy abt bags? cos i am too!! came upon this site www.huabags.com sometime ago. quite like it but did not buy any...these days it's big bags to put hannah's stuffs. have been wanting to buy an easel stand, and finally bought one at ikea.

personally, i find audio books too much a hassle...think apricot has quite a few audio bks.

i presume there's no need for plan B for our botanic gdns outing since the haze is clearing. think if it's easier to prepare our own snacks? anyone going to bring balls?

Hi Lena,

I also have the $3 black & white clock and yah you reminded me I can use it to teach time to Aston
happy.gif
happy.gif

Hi Sarah,
Yeap, our botanic gdns outing is pretty near now..
agree we prepare our own snacks. I have 3 balls (2 big and one small) and will bring them along that day.

sarah
caught u just in time b4 i log out. yes, i am bags-crazy, i used to own many b4 i have mel, now my pretty bags are all mouldy so i gave them all away, i went to this site, flirt connection, they have very cool stuff but mostly out of stock. my bags are cheapo type but must be unqiue and eye-catching, i hardly have time to visit cool places like hereen n level 1 so have to resort to online buying...

lena,
i do not have the heart to give/dump my bags away...hey, nice bags need not be expensive...hmm, does hereen has nice bags? that plc makes me feel old and out of plc...anyway, it has been ages since i step into orchard rd.

i think 'secret garden' suits you. very dainty. the compartments comes in handy. hey, why not 'melody' too? the mommy will have 2 'melodys' in each hand.

Hey Sarah and Lena
Talking about bags..i also have lotsa them and they are old ones either too small for me now or they are just too old for me to use nowadays. I also do not have the heart to give/dump them. They are stored in my store rooms now and I jus wonder when and how will they get disposed...haiz..

Hi ky!

Mine are the opposite: it's usually the little sister snatching toys away from the brother and she'll lose coz of her size and poor coordination.

I keep drumming in "share", "take turns" or "Bryan, Miss Julie will not be pleased to see that" etc. Or when they argue about whose toys those are, I'll take them all away from them both and say they belong to me.

There was once I just kept putting away toys that they fought over... until they had very few left to play with. Maybe you can try that... like nobody-wins-if-no-one-is-willing-to-share kind of idea.

I thought Serenade once shared a pretty good idea on fights, i.e. she'll just watch and then shower the loser with hugs and kisses.

Hi ky!

Where's Ben's school/cc?

What do they do?

It sounds interesting.

Bryan's school is also celebrating Halloween next Monday. Kids can dress up but nothing scary. And they'll go around in the American settlement for treats.

I've not looked up why Halloween is such a big thing esp with the Americans but I always thought it had something to do with All Saints' Day (Nov1) and All Souls' Day(Nov2) which follow right after that.

Any idea why the pumpkin too?

Hi Lena!

How do you teach time?

I've started Bryan on o'clock and half past concept. He can recognise when it's on the play clock. But it's difficult for him to look at the clocks at home. Maybe I'll get the cheap one from Ikea to teach him too.

But recently, I've seen him playing on his own, pretending to be a clock himself with his legs as long hands and arms as short hand. And he turned around on the floor going, "one o'clock, two o'clock etc". That was quite funny to watch.

Hi apricot!

Any recommendations on audio books? And how does Aston respond to them?

Do audio books come with a hard copy and a CD/cassette for listening? I thought something for the children to look at would be quite good.

Have you tried ebooks before?
I chanced upon this site about ten months back. It's from a guy from India whoe has written children's ebooks online for free downloads.
I tried the ugly duckling with Bryan and it was a hit.
But I try not to let him stay on the computer too much and I try to phase out the online entertainment (Spot/Bob the Builder/Sesame Street etc). Otherwise he bothers his dad or me when our laptops are switched on.

Anyway, you can still explore this with Aston.

http://www.dadazi.net/Home/totpage.html

It's a lot of fun for us.

Hi Mommies!

Any good internet links to share?

Would you all like to compile a list/excel spreadsheet and have it sorted according to categories/genres?

e.g.
literacy/worksheets
art/craft/colouring
nursery rhymes/singing
fun/games
ebooks
cultures/festivals for children
etc

Any other inputs?
I haven't been very organised since I stopped working.

Here's a short list we can look at together. But they are mainly nursery rhymes that I was looking at in beginning of this year.

Hi Lena!

Richard Scarry's Funniest Book Ever is going at 11,80 Euros with free delivery. So that makes about S$24.
You got a really good deal at Kino.

You are really tempting me to order this book now.

Hi ky!

Does Ben have to dress up for Halloween?

I'm wondering what I can let Bryan wear. Am wondering if I'm gonna do face painting... but am afraid he might get irritable with the face paint coz he's got be in school for 5 hours.

Serenade,
does Brandon's kindergarten celebrate Halloween too? Any suggestions on costume?

Halloween is proving to be a stressful occasion to me now... In Germany, there's another big dress up carnival in February called Fasching. In short, it's meant to drive out the winter devils (cold) - an old ritual practised by the farmers mainly then. It welcomes the spring and also marks the beginning of the mourning (Ash Wednesday) till Easter. It's like big scale Halloween thingy and kids are happy with all the treats. So I guess it will be quite worthwhile to invest in some costumes since Bryan will be here for a couple more Halloweens and Faschings.

Hi Worry Mum!

No idea why the file cannot be opened.

Any moms would like to help out with the list?
Or since the idea is already elsewhere in the forum, do you still want to replicate effort?

Actually I was thinking of making an easy to find list for everyone.

For moms who would like to contribute, send your links and the genre/category that you think the web site might be slotted into. And I think most moms will be thankful for a brief desccriptions, e.g. one/two lines which I can then slot it under "Comments".
happy.gif

Anyway, do let me know if you're interested to help out in assembling a spreadsheet.
