Stillbirth experience

I had a stillbirth at 34 weeks early this year. No issues throughout the pregnancy journey, no warnings, no early symptoms except no fetal movement at week 33+. Test showed that there was placenta abruption. Is there any preventive measures to prevent such occurrence? See TCM? And any recommendation for gynae? Or should I stick w my gynae for future pregnancy?

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss, I had an abortion last year October when baby was 5 months old because baby had a major heart defect that is not operable even after birth.
Im sorry but there is really no preventive measures for things like this, I too asked the gynae why did that happened because I had 2 beautiful healthy boys and he said mostly its a one off occurrence. TCM can only 调 your body to carry the pregnancy better but not prevent any complications or defects. I hope you're feeling better.

Thank you for your kind words :)

Hey there, sorry for your loss and always here if you need a listening ear. Did gynae advise cause of your placenta abruption? Do you trust your gynae, and did he/she offer you a decent explanation to what has happened? If you are not comfortable with your gynae, I would change. No recommendations as I am trying to find one here too as well. I had a stillbirth last year at 37+weeks when I was in labour. Gynae screwed up and tried to hide it in my case. Second gynae then told us our son had IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) which could have been easily detected but unfo not. I decided to try TCM, going this week, think it’s no harm trying. :)

Hi Melisa,

Sorry to hear about your loss too. How does the second gynae know it’s IUGR? Did u see two gynaes concurrently?

Thank you for sharing. Hope you don’t mind.

Thanks DT. Only saw one gynae throughout our pregnancy. Two weeks after birth we went back to gynae #1 to get some test results but did not get the closure/explanation. After some recommendations, we went to gynae #2 to seek a second opinion and he told us our son has IUGR solely from looking at his weight from the scans. My son was at the 5-25th percentile on the scale during pregnancy and still came out severely underweight. He weighed even lesser than what was showed on the scans in week 33. That’s how badly our first gynae screwed up. Gynae #2 did tell us IUGR can be possibly picked up from 1st trimester from OSCAR + additional test

OMG, that’s so screwed up … Can feel your frustration and pain then … Hope u get over it and look forward to the new journey!

My gynae was saying that the cause of placenta abruption is usually due to HBP. But my bp was always good for all the check-ups. She was also asking me if I had intense cramps or headache, which I dont. Hence, she couldn't explain more. I had the usual obstetric ultrasound for growth with full doppler to assess fetal growth and well-being just a few days before I realised there was no more fetal movement. Hence, it could be that the sonographer screwed up. But then, maybe my son or placenta was really fine on that day and suddenly, they are not ~2 days later. But I am comfortable w my gynae, as I don't know if there was anything that could have been detected by both my gynae and the sonographer in the first place.

Anyway, did you mean that when you were in labour at 37+ weeks, your son was still doing fine? It must also be very shocking to you.
For me, since that was my first pregnancy and I read up that I would have 1 in 10 pregnancy for it to happen again, I thought that I should have some preventive measures (i.e. TCM, changing gynae?..)

I thought weight can be easily detected in the scans during pre natal checkups. But I do hear that there may be a 15% error in ultrasound fetal weight estimation.

Thanks for sharing. If you are comfortable with your gynae, then I think you can consider sticking with her as she understand your situation best and might be more wary and show more empathy. Since the questions she asked is pointing more to your health than baby’s health, I think that’s what you will need to focus on for before and during your next pregnancy. Think asides supplements, TCM is our only hope left. Just like the whole logic with having confinement meals after giving birth. I made my first appt for tomorrow so will only be able to give you some feedback only few months down the road

It’s my first pregnancy as well and after the experience I don’t know if I can place my trust in a gynae ever again. For my next pregnancy I plan to have a gynae I go to for the routine visits, and just one more at the side to maybe go randomly just to make sure things are ok? Not sure if this is best approach but learnt that it is better to be safe than sorry.

I started experiencing regular contractions and since I was already at full term I went to the hospital without any concerns. But once I went in to the labour ward, they told me they couldn’t detect his heartbeat anymore. Yea my dr kept telling me abt the 15% margin but mine was so far off. Just 5days before giving birth was my last checkup with him measuring 2.3kg. But he was only 1.7kg at birth. And throughout third trimester, we did raised our concerns a few times on the low weight but dr reassured us it was fine

You're right. I think having another random gynae would be good, though the cost would be more than what it already is

Mine was 1.8kg at birth (34weeks). Weight during checkup (33weeks) was ~2.1kg. Abit more than 15%, but yours definitely much more.
Anyway, I just saw this online and looking at my scan's report, I had a right uterine notch seen. Gynae didnt bring it up so I didnt thought of anything. But anyways, maybe it does mean nothing. Sigh..

Thank you though for sharing your experience. Maybe I should also go for TCM then.

The right uterine notch was mentioned in the report or you figured that out yourself? During your next pregnancy you should ask your gynae. If not it will always be at the back of your mind.

I haven’t decide which gynae to go to next, but I’m this is my tiny list so far:
Prof Su Lin Lin (NUH)
Dr Steven Teo (Stog)

I used to prefer private practice/female gynae but it didn’t benefit my situation.
Hopefully we get more recommendations from other in the following weeks.

I just took out my FA and OBS scan report just nw. Both stated about the right uterine notch. I'm guessing it could be mild and doesn't raise any red flag to my gynae. She was known to be experience though.

Same here, I thought I would prefer private practice/female gynae.. but now... hmm..

chanced upon this thread and sorry for the losses. I had 2 miscarriages prior and was distraught as well. based on my visitation with pvt and public hospitals gynae, i recommend that you go with NUH. NUH has docs that are experience in the field of placenta irruption, IUGR etc.. why i responded to this thread is becos after 2 miscarriages, i had researched and read extensively on what potentially could be wrong with my body that i had consecutive miscarriages. Anyways long story, but i went with NUH as they have a high risk pregnancy unit, and thru series of tests, i did have some issues with my blood that could lead to miscarriages. my understanding with pvt gynae is that they are only suitable for normal with no complications delivery, as public hospital still deals with a higher vol of cases so more experience. and if you do have complications, the hospital is better equipped and more wallet friendly. Anyway i had given birth to my son who is already 17mo and pregnant with the 2nd. All the best and Jiayou!

thanks for sharing. just for my future reference, did you have to go to a polyclinic for a referral to nuh? Do you usually wait a long time to see a gynae? And will there will be ‘student doctors’ attending to us? Thank you!

if u want to save cost and under high risk pregnancy, u can go polyclinic and specifically asked to be referred to NUH high risk clinic..at the subsidised clinic which is call clinic C, u will not be attended by students doc but they will be around to assist the main doc as part of their learning.. under Clinic C, unless u specify u r high risk pregnancy, u will not get rotated to high risk gynae. so like for my case given my miscarriage history, all the docs that saw me at clinic C specialised in high risk fetal care.. or if u dont mind the cost, u can just go straight to pvt NUH under any of the high risk fetal care doc which im doing now for my 2nd pregnancy..

Thanks for the info. Can we choose gynae in NUH high risk clinic if we go to polyclinic and specifically asked to be referred to there?

if u go for subsidised route, u cannot pick your gynae. the gynaes will be rotated, but if ur case is special with valid history, then you can ask the polyclinic to specifically asked for high risk fetal gynaes, but you will still get rotated high risk fetal gynaes..anyway NUH has a whole team of gynae specialised in this field, u can check out their website..

Anyway, do you think you can let me know who's your 1st gynae who screwed up your prenancy? Just for reference.

Hi Jlingmummy, i'm going polyclinic to get referral to high risk clinic. But unsure to go for kkh or nuh. Is nuh a better choice? Any recommendation?

A few years ago, I received a diagnosis that I was carrying a stillbirth and I was given an option to either wait for natural labour to arrive or induce labour. Given my circumstance and emotional maturity then, I decided on the latter. At the recommendation of a friend, I went to Dr Ben Choey for the procedure, which went quickly and painlessly. There were no complications nor consequence to my fertility. From then until now, I know that it was the right decision.
