Desperately Hoping for More Milk

Hi mummies. My bf experience with my first ger was not very smooth due to inexperienced as a first time mum but managed to bf her for three months. My second ger was 5 weeks old now and I hope to bf her for long. Though this time my milk supply was more than the first time, I found that the milk supply was stagnant at between 80 to 100ml (pump at every 4 hours).
I did not latch as my ger was slow in sucking and most of the time, she was sleeping, no matter how hard I try to wake her up, she will still be sound asleep. Therefore, I decided to pump every 3 to 4 hours, drink sacred tea, drink lots of fluid like red date tea and soup. However, my milk supply still remain at 80 to 100ml.
Though it's enough for my ger now as she is on TBM now, I'm afraid it wil not be enough for her as she grows up and her appetite will increase. What should I do further to increase my milk supply? Thanks.

1. Fluid - drink at least 30mins before latch / pump. Your body needs time to create milk. You need to have about 2 litres of fluid everyday.

2. Rest - If you are stressed, milk quality and quantity will not be good.

3. Pump for a slightly extended time - What I did was after latching, I would pump for an additional 30-60mins (with a short break in-between for toilet, etc). Rememer to take in fluids too.

4. Supplements like fenugreek should help. Ut the first 2 points are the key.

Hope this helps.

If you really want to increase, go for 2-3 hrs per pump, tell your breasts you need more milk.. slowly will increase...

For lactation, try to take chicken essence daily. It helps. I drink twice per day during my first delivery.

How long did you pump each time? Try to pump for min half an hour is you are using dual pump. Normally each express can have 2-3 let down.

Try to find something to do when you are expressing, do not focus on how much milk liao.. will make yourself stressed... I often surf internet, shop at singaporemotherhood ... and before I know it.. milk bottle full liao

Good luck!!

I find latching the best. My first gal is 6mo now. The first 4-6 wks din go well cos of inexperience, sleepy baby, incorrect latching etc etc. Somehow, naturally it became better. Mayb cos I was less stressed and I think, she got bigger and latched better. I managed to tbf her throughout my maternity leave.

Most bf mothers i come across start off very badly. So dont feelsad . Heres for sharing. , the content of the breastmilk is never the same everyday. And the quality of the milk directly depend on your daily diet.
1. Your diet is important .You need rich protein high calcium n minerals foods to sustain your baby needs.
Carbon foods not really wat you need at this time, so eat less on that, enough to supple energy . Important to take note never eat ginseng during the 1st 3 mths of breastfeeding, your milk supply will dip instead of increasing. And Always at mealtime, finish your protein n minerals foods first, before your carbon foods. Fast way to absorb n digest the protein n minerals is thru drinking soup

2.sleep and rest is another power factor that regenerate milk. Fast . Try afternoon nap n early evening nap. Bed feeding yor baby so that after the feed you can go nap to regenerate your milk.

3.ea feeding duration should last more than 25mins but notmore than 60 mins. Heres why. When start feeding on a full breast , the 1st 3 to 4mins your breast release water with little fat to your baby to quench thirst. Then after 5mins of feeding, the breast release foremilk to your baby . After drinking for 15 to 20mins, the breast finally release the hindmilk to the baby. This is the milk that will help baby grow more heavier.

Drink lots of fluids. Try different teas as well. Fennel and fenugreek tea are good - Buy the seeds from the Indian spice shop and steep. Buy fenugreek from GNC - saleslady told me one of her customers took 12 a day...
I take 2.
I used to take 9 at the beginning (1 bottle) when I was trying to get my supply up.
