Dealing With PUPPP Itchy Rash

Hi Everyone,

I am in my 3rd trimester at 34 weeks+ now and this is my first pregnancy. Around 2 weeks ago, I realised that my body started to itch at my thighs and arms then slowly felt the itch at my belly area and chest last week. Past two nights I can wake up in the middle of the night feeling like whole body itch and hard to fall asleep. Asked some mummy friends and they mentioned that what I am having now could be PUPPP itchy rash.

Just applied calamine lotion (assumed to be very safe) and was advised by friend to take chlorphenamine (1 yellow tablet to stop runny nose and itch). Will do just that and maybe see a G.P tomorrow or Monday for further advice. Any experienced mummy has advice to share on how to cope with PUPPP with as best natural method as possible without consuming any medicine ? Read that this can only be fully cured only after birth ...so opened this thread for advice and help in overcoming this itch like me now and for others who experiencing this also ! Am trying very best not to scratch but it is so itchyy..

It could due to change body hormone changes, DO NOT apply/consume any medicine without consulting your gynae

Hey, suggest you see your gynae to rule out Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy. I had that in my first pregnancy and the itch was always keeping me up at night....

Take care!

Hi Hopeful23, my last gynae visit was a week ago and next appnt is a week later so trying my best not to bring forward my appnt if not really necessary as last night managed to sleep better. May I know for your first pregnancy when you had Intrahepatic Cholestasis issue, what was the treatment solution you had to resolve that issue ?

I had to do blood tests on liver function and check for bile acid level at every visit. I wasn't given medication until 1 day before delivery which I also dunno why... U wanna exchange number as I can reply faster on WA?

Hi Hopeful23, thanks for the reply. My itch seems to better already after calamine lotion application after bath and I will bring forward my gynae appnt if needed to check for the condition you mentioned if it really does itch again. As you mentioned, guess also no use. But your answer on given medication until 1 day before delivery proves useful to me. Thanks a lot.

Had went for the blood test for Intrahepatic Cholestasis this morning and fortunately results came out negative for this. So is puppp and so i just have to endure as best possible.

On a side note, my routine urine test today reflected that I have or going to have uti... so have to be on antibiotics for the uti.. no wonder past two days realised urine a bit warm feeling...will take this brought forward appnt as a blessing in disguise, clear my fears on the liver issue and early treatment on uti before it becomes painful !
