Any mummies facing the same thing as me? DS is now 25mths but still don't know how to suck water from the straw and he refuses to try. He only started to use the sippy cup one mth ago.

Can some mummies share your experience?

what we did was to fill an empty packet drink (e.g. Yeo's) with drinking water, then after putting the straw in our DS' mouth, squeeze the packet a little so that water flows up through the straw and into his mouth.

This should help him realise what's the straw is for and learn the sucking motion.

All the best!

Hi doobie, the main reason is becos u started it too late. Becos he has already adapted the habit that he drinks water from his milk btl, that's y u need more time to change him rather than training a 8mth old to drink from straw. My elder sis has the same problem, as she always has this thinking that they will do things themselves once they reach the right age. But its wrong, we shd input them the info when their brain is still empty. Her son is turning 3yrs this oct but still drink water from milk btl too.
I have a little suggestion, hope it helps. As he is already old enough, get him to choose a water btl himself at shopping centre. Tell him that he will drink water from the btl, so he can choose himself.

Hi Joelle

I started to train him when he was 12 mths old but he was just not interested at all, in both the straw and sippy cup; regardless of whether the bottle is nice, the drink is sweet etc. So I stopped, not wanting to force him.

Lately i started to train him with sippy cup again, fortunately he adapted.

The good news is, just last sat, i brought out the old straw cup from my cupboard for him to try and guess wat; he just sucked it without me even telling him wat to do.

Well, i guess they will do it when they are ready. Maybe it's my son's character as well... when he is not ready to do something, he just won't do it no matter how i teach or entice. :-)

Thanks to all the mummies who have given me ideas!

HIi, not to worry, i guess i its really they will do it when they are ready, my girl had the same problem too.. friends/relatives keep saying that i train her too late etc etc, I get frustrated cos i tried but she refused what can i do? haha, eventually when she is ready, then she suddenly can drink very well from the straw, no training needed. So i guess not too worry, when they are ready they will do it. :-)

I tink mine was about 24 months old for the drinking of straw she started walking only wen she was 22months, cant remember the exact months cos she is 4 now lololx. But I felt alot of pressure and stress abt he at that time, cos she sits later, crawls later, walks later etc etc, BUT then i realise that although she does it late, once she starts she can do it well.

Eg. walking, she was still crawling at 18 months!! Then friends/relatives say i never hold her hand to walk etc etc when i did, but she just refuse to cooperate, Was so worried, she wasnt even cruising around, then 1 day.. suddenly she can walk across the house already... :-)

hi zelene

thanks for sharing. never occured to me tat your daughter is already 4 yo. :-)

i can absolutely understand your feeling when the development is delayed. for e.g my son.. though his motor skills was ok, i find his speech a bit delayed. at 26mths, only saying single words, not phrases yet.

some kids just cannot be rushed into things, can they? think my son is one of those kids.
