sleepyhead, 5mg is fine. however, gynae prescribed 10mg a day till i reach 3 mths pregnancy. i was informed not to worry about overdose as folic acid is water soluble. any unabsorbed folic acid will be passed out through the urine... |

bbunny, I believed there's only 1 kind of folic acid. Unless you are asking about diff brands. I bought from Unity as it's the cheapest. The one my gynae give is also the same as the unity one. You shld start taking now and continue till the end of 1st trimester. |

Summer, Dun need so kiasu lah.. :p Eat 3 mths before TTC can already. But if you are not using any contraceptive, then better take now. 5mg (1 tab) a day is good enough. Normally I just take in the morning with my other pills. But if wake up late, then eat later. No need to eat after food. I dun think there's any side effect as it's just a form of Vit B. http://www.medicinenet.com/folic_acid-oral/article.htm SIDE EFFECTS: Folic acid usually has very few side effects. If you have any unusual effects from taking this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. If you are staying near the east side, I will strongly suggest Dr Heng Tung Lan at Bedok (delivers only at Eastshore) I really liked her a lot and was glad that she is the one delivering me. She's full of confidence and will let you feel you are in good hand from the start till the end. Eastshore hospital is very nice too! Very homely place. Nice food, nice nurse! Three's a thread on her too in the forum. Just do a search. |

melody, Actually folic acid does help to increase chances of pregnancy. But it's your hb who must take. :p http://ezinearticles.com/?Learn-How-To-Increase-Your-Semen-Volume-With-Food&id=428306 Folic Acid contains iron, and foods that are rich in iron are key to increasing sperm production and are vital for healthy sperm. I got my hb to take folic acid too when we were TTC. |

Melody, Kekeke... can go read up on more ways to increase sperm production, and it's motility. There are also food to take/ not to take if you are trying for a specific sex. And if your menses is regular, you can TTC on days where certain gender is more favourable. |

Melody, If yours is irregular, then track your EWCM (egg white cervical mucus). BD when the mucus is there, higher chances of boy. BD before mucus appears (meaning no BD after mucus), higher chances of girl. :p |

Ya, it looks like raw egg white. Hmm, for me, it comes every month. I'm not sure whether all women should have it thou. I do know that having menses doesnt mean you are ovulating, and you can be ovulating while not having menses. There's another way... check your OS. Er, this method is a bit graphic. So I shall not explain here. This is a method that I seldom see books recommend. But it is useful. Pls refer to this link. http://www.sisterzeus.com/cervob.htm |

Summer, Rem to get your hb to eat too. Melody, Folic acid seldom causes side effect as it's just another form of vit B. And you are not taking a high dosage too. But if you are unclear, do check with your GP to get more assurance. I do think taking folic acid may cause your body to be a bit more heaty, so do drink more water too. |

Hi, as mentioned by Sneaky on the previous posting it is ok even if the intake exceeds cos folic acid is water soluble and will be pass out through urination if excess. 5mg=500mcg only, so it's fine. I am taking 800mcg now. |

hi Tots, Isnt 5mg=5000mcg? http://www.convertunits.com/from/mg/to/mcg. Hmm, i'm confuse on the metric. I thought overdosage of folic acid is equivalent to overdosage of vitamins, which result in reverse effects. Maybe Sg is relax on folic acid dosage. In USA, recommended daily intake is only 1000 mcg = 1 mg. Currently, i only taking 400 mcg(= 0.4 mg, I bought off the shelf). When i bump into this thread, i thought i'm too much way below the requirement. Can you or anyone clarify my doubts? |

Hi, it's important to take folic acid before conceiving. Taking folic acid before and during 1st trimester helps prevent birth defects. It is as important to take before as it is to take during. Baby is formed the quickest in the first trimester, and women don't realise they are pregnant until they are at least 2 weeks' pregannt. Also, taking folic acid before pregnancy will help build up your body's store of folic acid. |

Thanks. Yes, you may take folic acid even before conceive. Just that the folic acid which I bought is 800mcg and not sure if this is the normal dosage or is it too much already? Just to share with you this. Found this on the webby : What Is Folic Acid and Why Does Your Baby Need it? Folic acid is a naturally occurring B vitamin that helps a baby's neural tube—the part of a developing baby that becomes the brain and spinal cord—develop properly. It must be taken before and during early pregnancy when the neural tube is developing. Folic acid works, but it only works if taken before and during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when the neural tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord. When the neural tube does not close properly, a baby is born with a very serious birth defect called a neural tube defect (NTD). About 3,000 pregnancies are affected by NTDs each year in the United States. If all women took adequate folic acid before conception and during pregnancy, up to 70 percent of NTDs could be prevented. |

I dun think there is anything bad in overconsuming folic acid... and if there are supplements with 800mcg folic acid, I dun think it's an overdose. But if in doubt, check with the pharmacist. no need to go to doctor for this,. |

maybe you can ask your GP who gave you the flu medicine and antibiotic? Personally, I think it's okay, cos I'm sure pregnant women do fall ill once in a while during pregnancy and I know drugs like panadol are okay and wno't harm unborn baby. ANd there are women who get pregnant without even realising it.Most women don't even realise they are pregnant until they are 4 or 5 weeks! When you ask them if they were ill when they conceived, they prob can't recall. I know to stay away from party drugs and alcohol when attempting to conceive though. but I'm not a doctor.... |

Hi micky, Nope! I'm not a mummy nor mum-to-be. Hb is a doctor and he tells me what to do, what not to do, what is safe and what is unsafe in the event I am pregnant. But we aren't trying for a kid. I'm roaming this forum to learn more from MTBs and mothers and my options in the event I find myself pregnant. Pregnancy brings about many changes... too many things to do and too little time to make decisions when pregnancy occurs, so I rather absorb knowledge from experienced MTBs and mothers so I'm aware of my options in the event I find myself pregnant. |

Jocelyn, Must take the folic acid & the rest of the vits your gynae gave you. Good for the baby. you're still at 1st tri? juz curious b cos folic acid was taken during 1st tri & other vits starts only at 2nd tri. folic acid is no longer necessary at 2nd tri since other vits the gynae gave has it. |

hi, when i was pregnant, my gynea prescribed me 5mg of folic acid to take daily. 2nd tri he gave me multi-vits whc incl folic acid. anyway abt the folic acid, he charged me $10 for 30tabs but when i went to guardian pharmacy, they have the exact same type for abt $5 for i think 50tabs. so after i finished wat my gynae prescribed to me i didn't buy frm him again, bought from pharmacy instead. sometimes private docs mark up their meds so much when we can get it them frm pharmacy at a much cheaper price. |

Hi stickymouse, The unity pharmacy folic acid at $2.50 for 100 tablets is the same one which I got from my gynae at glenE. So it should be fine. |

stickymouse, Folic acid is not an expensive pill. Unity is indeed selling $2.50 for 100 tablets. Even in Australia where medicine is super expensive, 100 tablets of 5mg is only $5AUD which is already very expensive. Anyway, just to reassure you, my gynae said the Unity brand one is as good as any other brands. |

Folic acid requires no prescription. In fact it's nothing like medication, its just something like supplement, ie. similar to taking Vitamins etc. Yes, pls start taking folic if u r gonna try for a BB. In fact some books even say it good to eat 3 months ahead of TTC. Scroll up the thread to read more bout the benefits for folic b4 pregnancy. |

hi sharon, there's a saying to "spread out" the time of eating "chinese med" and "western med". I take both folic & bai feng wan. Folic take every day (normally morning). bai feng wan i only take monthly. so depends on why you are taking them too. i took folic cos i went for pre-conceive checkup and doc advised to take folic once you want to TTC. hi princessxiaomei, it's ok. my doc prescribe folic acid to me. but after the 1st round, i just bought it without any prescription. it is very cheap and yes you should start taking now. |

Hi gals, I went to Unity and bought their folic acid. 100 tablets for $2.50! Goodness, my GP previously charges me over $10 for 30 tablets, and they are the EXACT same thing. So really should buy from pharmacy if you are thinking of taking folic. |

Dear all, I just taken a HCG test yesterday and it is positive I am 4 mths pregnant. I have been taking GNC pre-natal multi-vit on and off, not consistent before my pregnancy. I have decided not to continue taking the pre-natal multi-vit as it contains 10000IU vitamin A ( I read from the internet that it is not advisable to take that when one is pregnant). Hence, I am taking the 800mcg GNC folic acid from today onwards. As I am currently overseas in China(not first tier city), I am quite lost here. Is there any other tablets that I should be taking besides folic acid? Did your gynae advise you? Another question is what are the typical tests that your gynae carry out for you? Is it too early for ultra-scan now? |

Dear mummies, I'm TTC currently so went to the Unity pharmacy to get folic acid. The salesgirl told me that the 5mg tablet is not really meant for preggie or TTC women but more for women with anemia. She said that 5mg is overdose and recommended me another one which is meant for us (only 1mg dosage). The price difference is tremendous!! 5mg (100 tablets) - $2.50 1mg (100 tablets - meant for pregnant women) - $22 Then she also showed me another multi-vits for pregnant women and the folic acid is also 1mg only. What is the difference really? Can I take half a tablet of the 5mg? Anyway, my colleague who is currently pregnant was prescribed the same 5mg tablet by her gynea... So I am really confused. Besides constipation (I heard), what other side effect of "overdosage"? |

EiLiYa, Folic acid 5mg is most needed during 1st trimester. I was taking 2x5mg (from unity) per day as prescribed by my gynae. When I reach 2nd trimester, I am taking blackmores pregnancy multi-vits which total folic acid dosage is 0.5mg per day. I do not think folic acid causes constipation. Perhaps the iron/calcium in some multivits will. |

Folic acid is an important nutrient for women who may become pregnant, because a woman's blood levels of folate fall during pregnancy due to an increased maternal RBC synthesis in the first half of the pregnancy & fetal demands in the second half. The first four weeks of pregnancy (when most women do not even realize they are pregnant) require folic acid for proper development of the brain, skull, and spinal cordSerious birth defects like neural tube defects are less likely to occur when women take 0.4 mg of folic acid daily. Adequate folate intake during the periconceptional period, the time right before & just after a woman becomes pregnant, helps protect against a number of congenital malformations From Wikpedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folic_acid |

Women planning a pregnancy need to take a daily dose of folic acid. This dose will either be a low dose of 800 µg day, or a high dose of 5 mg day of folic acid, depending on the perceived risk of having a NTD affected pregnancy, for at least four weeks before conception and 12 weeks after conception From this website: http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/nutrition-folate#folate3 |

Hi Bakaholic & JJ, Thanks for the info. I'm just concerned about overdosage and yet the price difference makes it hard to justify why I'll get 1mg dosage for 10 times the price. Anyway, I started to take the 5mg pills today. Btw Bakaholic, why did your gynea prescribe such high dosage for you in the 1st tri? |

Eliya, I guess my gynae is just KS.. My last gynae asked me to take 3 tablets/day! Sweetsnow, Are you ttc or already succeeded? If just ttc, just take folic acid, vit C and balanced diet. Unless you are anaemic, no need iron cos it's heaty. I think someone mentioned some conceiving supplements from blackmores. I didn't take those. If you are expecting, multivits and calcium is required from 2nd trimester onwards. Aileen, The folic acid from unity is the same brand from my gynae. What other type of folic acid are you looking for? I guess folic acid is just folic acid, just dosage and brand difference. |

Hi all, Just happened to chance upon this thread. Very curious about the recommended dosage of folic acid. I am taking Nature farm for a year now, it costs $16.80 for 120 tablets (before discount). I din know Unity sell so cheap. Moreover, Nature farm's dosage is 400mcg. After reading all these, I really ponder if I am taking enough. I had been TTC for a yr now. |

Website: http://www.mims.com/Singapore/drug/info/folic%20acid/folic%20acid?type=full&mtype=generic Folate-deficient megaloblastic anaemia Adult: 5 mg daily for 4 mth, up to 15 mg daily in malabsorption states. Continued dosing at 5 mg every 1-7 days may be needed in chronic haemolytic states, depending on the diet and rate of haemolysis. Prophylaxis of megaloblastic anaemia in pregnancy Adult: 0.2-0.5 mg daily. Prophylaxis of neural tube defect in pregnancy Adult: 4 or 5 mg daily starting before pregnancy and continued through the 1st trimester. As supplement for women of child-bearing potential Adult: 0.4 mg daily. In summary, i think normal women conceiving or pregnant should consume 0.4mg. Question: I am consuming 0.4mg of folic acid after lunch and consuming multivitamins (which contains 0.3mg folic acid) after dinner. Not sure if this is overdosage?? |

Just chance upon this thread. To all ladies who are TTC, please take folic acid. There is no harm of overdosage. Those cheap ones from Unity is good enough. The 5mg type. Just take! At one stage I was taking 3 to 4 pills a day. No side effects whatsoever. U must be wondering why I take so much. Cause my first baby ended up with neural tube defect. That was in 2006. At that time when I preg, I never heard of folic acid before. By the time I start taking (from gynae), I was already 3 mths preg. In the end, I had to terminate my preg after detailed scan at 22wks. I cried buckets over it and when I subsequently found out that folic acid is such a cheap supplement (few dollars!!) but I didn't know! I felt so stupid that I didn't find out more about the supplements to take. Subsequently I had two other pregnancies n took folic acid morning afternoon and night. My babies came out healthy and fine. They are both toddlers now So ladies, just go to Unity to buy. No need expensive brands. All unabsorbed folic acid will just pass out in urine. Good luck to those TTC! |

on my first visit, when my gynae asked if i have my own folic acid, i said yes and shown him mine as i brought along some of my own supplements to confirm with the gynae that it's safe to continue consuming them. mine is 1mg only. but he said enough, just take one per day. he didn't prescribe me anymore folic acid, but he did prescribe me a prenatal multivit that includes 1mg folic acid as well, along with calcium supplement. |

remember that besides folic acid, u shld start building up ur own health. eat healtiher, exercise cos u need ur muscles alot. Also, take more calcium and iron to boost it up. U still need to take those pills in the pregnancy, but then, it is never too late to ensure your body has sufficient of key elements =) |
