Thanks, pianojazzy. I also have a boy who is taking Gr 3 practical exam this July and his teacher couldn't teach him anymore after the exam. Should I get him another teacher from the same school or find a private one instead so that she could also teach my girl? I really have no idea on how to choose a good piano teacher for her as I have no music background. Any recommendations from you? Thanks. |

u r welcome. How come the teacher can't teach him anymore? Which sch is he in? The advantages of learning from sch is that parents and students will be more serious, better concentration and won't disrupt daily activities like tv or pc. (ie watch tv halfway and the teacher comes for lesson, that way, the child might still be think about the tv shows etc while having lessons) But the disadvantages are frequent change of teachers, inflexible timing, lessons missed are payable but not replaceable etc. Looking for private teachers, do ask for recommendations from friends, get a teacher with teaching diploma(this is different with performing diploma as one can play very well doesn't mean can teach) and with at least 5 - 8 yrs of teaching experience etc Do check out my blog at www.pianolessons.multiply.com as i have some articles regards to this. Hope this helps |

Hi pianojazzy, He joins Cristofori MLM since 4 yrs old and this teacher has been teaching him till now. She just said that she won't be teaching on the day which my son attends anymore. I only can shortlist nearby music schools like Fisherman, Galleria, Lynn Tan Piano Studio or Yamaha. |

Hi pianojazzy, Still remember me? You have been giving me good advice on music class for my girl. She had already attended 2 term of music group lesson which involves lots of activities lesson to learn music. She is 5 this april and started her on individual piano class 2months ago.Her weekly lesson involves practical and theory lesson. My girl was taught to read the note by reading CDEFG method and now she can play few pieces with both hands. I think she is progressing fine but abit lazy and i need to remind her to practice her piano daily. Though expect her to play 30 mins but she only can sit still for 15-20mins. Is that ok with her? Do you think she is progressing fine? Thanks, Micsarah |

Yup i remember That's fine. Not many children can be discipline to practise so mummy will have to nag hehe. Its common. Practise daily for 15-20 mins is fine if she can play the pieces fluently after that. Do talk to her teacher if she is progessing well and her teacher might have some suggestions as well. Hi Pianojazzy, Thanks for the advice given once again. It's really kind of you to share with so many mommies like us on learning music. It's really tough work but in the midst of learning, a child will get to learn not to give up easily and also to build up their patience and parental support and involvement is really important. With parent support, it will make the child feel less frustrating with learning at times and hence more willing to learn. I will sit in my girl's lesson every week and the teacher will record down things which she had taught in a notebook for us to bring home and recap. Hehe i am also learning at the same time as her and i also practice at home at times! Thank you once again. |

You are most welcome. It is good to record so that when the parents do not sit in, they know what is happening every lesson. That's what i normally do as well. I have students' parents who practises as well. I am glad about that too! Parental support is very very important. Which is what i always emphasise to parents. Life will be easy if all parents can understand this :D Once again, i agree that it is not learning piano only. Through learning piano, one will learn a lot more than learning how to play only. I have students with learning disablilties. It helps as well. One might not continue all the way till grade 8 but through learning piano, they will learn much more |

Hi Pianojazzy, Any good teacher to recommend in town, south or west area? My son is 38 months. You think it's too young to start him? Many has been telling me that it's too young to start for boys. My son is interested in piano, but not really in keyboard. Same for me, I like playing on piano, but not keyboard. |

Hi Giggler, 61 keys is fine for now. Hi Purin, 38 mths is a bit young for boys but you can always try music appreciation first for another 3 months and you can start him 1-1 by then. But if he can read alphabets and numbers, you can actually start him now |

Hi hi ladies Surprised to find this thread! May i ask, abit off track, how about adults? When is the latest age someone should stop thinking about learning piano? My hb is interested in learning the piano and he is 32. Pianojazzy, do you teach adults? As for me, i am looking for a good school or teacher for cello lessons. I have started learning and playing the cello a few years ago at Tanglewood Music School. My teacher Ivy Chang is no longer there plus its too far from my home, so ... TIA for any recommendations or sharing! Hey Purin *wave*, bumped into you here, hee! |

He plays Canon after learning for 2 months and he is playing Richard Clayerman now It is just the time and committment one is willing to put in. |

pianojazzy, thanks I not into music so not sure abt the basics. Now I understand what you mean by the different btw learning in gp and individual liao. The teacher in gp learning will just carry on the class and cant really focus on every kid. Guess if I really want my gal to learn, I'll have to let her attend individual lessons. |

Hi Giggler, I am glad that you understand. This is what i have been trying to say here haha. I am also teaching in groups but i make an effort to teach everyone individually so actually in the group lessons, all the students are in different pace. However in 1hr and with so many students, one student can only have about 10 min of my time every week. So they can't really learn a lot too. |

hi 2 hot, 1stly,u need to buy a piano or a keyboard,so ur child can practise.bcos practising is very important.afterthat I suggest looking for a private piano teacher, cos since that u hav no music background, normally private teacher might b hav more patient and times to explain ur child progress and the planning for your child/ if u wan to get cheaper fees,of cos u may find a music school which nearby ur house.they will recommend u a teacher. of cos everything u need ur teacher to guide u. |

Just sharing some thoughts on music - I think your kid needs to want to learn it, and it'll be easier for both the parent and the child. Otherwise, it's like 'forcing' them to learn it. No one in my family plays any musical instruments except for my brother, and it happened by chance. My brother was about 7 when he saw an orchestra playing on the TV. He told my mum he wanted to play the instrument (that was a violin). She brought him to a private violin tutor and he's been taking lessons since then and he's now a violin music teacher. He teaches both children and adults and tells me how some kids (3-4 yr old) cannot sit down for classes and always run around. But kids will be kids, and until they can learn to sit down, it's very difficult to teach them properly. |

Should I give send him for general music and let him choose the instrument later? Or do kids all start from piano by default? If learn piano, does it mean he will at some point sit for exam, or are exams optional? |

Hi peace, u may want to start ur boy off with group music classes which r available at eg. Yamaha music sch, Seimpi music sch or Cristofori music etc. just call them up to check on wads available for ur boy's age group.. Group classes are more of music appreciation.. Maybe let him try for a year bef u start him off with individual coz by den he'd have some basic foundation it'll be easier to go into more details. As for choosing instruments I'll suggest u allow him to choose wad he likes instead of jumping str8 into piano coz there're so many instruments to choose from! Exams in piano is totally optional.. Some parents want just for leisure for their children while some are more exams orientated.. It depends on how he's coping anyways.. For me my boy is just 26 mths old and I've started him out with music appreciation which he very much enjoy it.. Mainly don't kill his interested by forcing into individual right at the start unless u think he's ready for some serious biz. Hope this helps.. Good luck~ |

Hi. My 5yo boy told me that he is keen to learn piano and I took my boy to individual piano lesson since I am advised that he is too old to join the group lesson. Half way thru the first lesson he broke down and refuse to continue lesson. Now he dun even want to go near the piano. I dunno what has happened in the lesson between him and the teacher in the room. And I even suggested to change teacher for him, he also refuse to learn. What am I going to do? Can anyone advise? |

hi mummies, need some advice if kids of 4 years can learn violin...isn't this considered to be strenous than learning piano because of the instrument being held consistently ? i am not sure if i shld send my son to piano, keyboard or violin. when i ask him, he tells me piano. but i am not sure how ready he is for this. i know perhaps some trial classes may be good. but any other advice on this ? And are there any such classes near queenstown/holland/ghim moh that u know of ? |

Hi blue_genie, Have u tried talking to the teacher? There can be couple of reasons why ur boy didn't like it anymore.. It could be that he finds it interesting to see others playing but realize its too difficult afterall with all the practicing he has to do before n during lessons? Or he just feel bored sitting there for 45mins doing drills n songs repetitively? Or the teacher is demanding n strict which he feels difficult to get along for child of his age? Can be many reasons putting him off.. Guess by 5 he should be able to express his wants n don't wants quite clearly.. Suggest u talk to him n his teacher n see how it goes.. I am certain he need not do individual now u may want to try group classes to bring back his interest again..can also be more competitive in class which some children learn better in that manner.. I'm quite sure there are classes for his age coz well, he's only 5! just check around~ Don't give up.. |

Hi littlecoco, I talked to the teacher to find out why. the teacher told me he just burst out during the class and therefore she terminated the class. I also tried talking to my boy too he told me the teacher beat his hand. So I requested to change the piano teacher and even went to the lesson with the new teacher with him as well but he simply cried and refused to take the lesson. Worst now he dun even want to go near the piano. Maybe his interest just on 3 min type and I also dare not push him further to agitate him as whenever I ask him whether he wants to learn piano he said a big no to me. Another thing I like to share is I couldn't get back the fees I paid to the school for a term which I feel a bit heart pain cos it's not cheap as my son dun want to learn after 1st lesson so parents if you plan to let your kid to learn piano, u have to be really sure they are committed to learning. |

Hi blue_genie, I am not aware that u need to pay for an entire term for individual cos even group lessons goes on a monthly payment basis. If u paid a deposit in the beginning they will just forfeit the deposit? But guess ur boy phobic of being with the teacher alone n worried if he can't do it again the teacher will hit him so no matter u change teacher he doesn't feel secured. Maybe don't push him for now and if u really want him to stay on the track maybe u allow time for him to get over this and try a different approach of getting him back again. Like go group class where he can make friends n learn together with other children that he may feel less stressful learning alone? I've been a music instructor myself for the past 12 years realized children who are too young will probably stay longer in group n might look forward to class to ur surprise coz it's fun! Don't give up~ 😊 |

Hi littlecoco, Tks for ur encouragement and advise. I will heed your advise and hopefully can get my boy back to piano. Actually I requested a trial lesson for my boy from the school during enrollment but the school said there is no trial lesson. If really want, have to pay for the term and start learning. My niece learning from the same school also pay the school by term too, guess its their school policy bah. |

hi little coco i am proficient in piano and its real hardwork. Very tough for children. My girl has great interest but was very discouraged, even with a great teacher. Subsequently, her teacher recommended me to send her to "Music for Young Children". This course has high accolades among her teaching friends and seniors. And it cultivates total musicianship instead of just practicing for exams. I found it very high standard compared to other schools' offering. As I have piano background, they were able to articulate clear teaching goals, pedagogies and content milestones to me. I am happy to know that after 3 yrs, my child is well prepared for Grade 2 ABRSM Practical exam and knowledgable up to Grade 3 theory. At least the time and money is spent learning concret things rather than just music and movement. And the process is fun and well paced rather than just mugging through. its been 9 lessons for her, she has made tremendous progress in her understanding of music concepts and playing ability. Much much more than when she was under private lessons. She enjoys class very much and will not sleep if she does not practise! the course is highly motivating to children and fun. The group setting encourages learning. i am always so amazed and amused at how fun and effective they are at teaching very serious and dry music concepts. The creator is both accomplished educator and musicianship. Go check it out. Another private tutor will not help much at this point. www.myc.com.sg. there are videos of how they teach various segments. their IC, Sannly is very patient and helpful to explain everything. u will get a waiver of registration fees if recommended by an existing student. pm me if u are keen about it. I will give u my girl's name. Her brother coming 4 yrs, will join the program end of this month. Even if he doesn't pursue piano long term, he has enough knowledge and exposure to enjoy music and its arts for a life time. that's my gift to the kids. hope it helps u. go find out more first. |

Hi blue genie, Let me share my experience with you. I have a student who has the same issue as yours. He attended a music school trial lesson and he developed a phobia. Since then, he refused to attend music lessons regardless of pte or group. One day, her mum came to me. We arranged for a trial lesson but when the boy came, he do not know it was supposed to be a trial lesson. His mum told him that they are visiting a friend. So when he came over, we chit chat and slowly get him to the piano and voila! He agreed to take piano lessons Hope this helps! |
